St.Bernardus Tokyo Sounds familiar? You are quite right, because in 2012 we launched a one-off brew on the occasion of the opening of the first St.Bernardus-themed café in the Japanese capital. Eight years later, you can sample our St.Bernardus Tokyo again, albeit with a new recipe!

The young Belgian illustrator Jonas Devacht created the artwork for the can, which consists of an impression of Japanese nightlife in the iconic streets of Kanda district, where you can find ‘Brasserie St.Bernardus’.

St.Bernardus Tokyo is an unfiltered ale, which has been brewed with a large amount of wheat, holding the middle between a white beer and a saison.

Character, taste, aromas
St.Bernardus Tokyo is famed for its hints of citrus, combined with likeable florals of chamomile and fruity yeast aromas of banana and red apple. Attentive beer fans may also detect a hint of clove and vanilla, as well as the typical esters of our unique St.Bernardus yeast. A refreshing beer with a spicy aroma and a slight hint of bitterness and sourness on the back of the palate! A real treat for the more adventurous beer fan.

Tap. Hazy pale golden color with white head. Aroma is strong cloves, bananas, estery, almost Tripel-ish. Taste is the same, great balance, a touch mineraly. Oily mouthfeel with low carbonation. Stellar balance, great beer!

12oz can with code L1138 14:12. BCBACOAT, drunk 7/4/22. Clear, peachy-gold. Small, white head, minimal retention. Mint, basil, vanilla, coriander I suppose, in the nose. More weird, astringent herb and heavy vanilla in the mouth. Soft texture, at least, but the flavors are just bizarre and there's too much vanilla character. I'm sure sitting on the shelf didn't help its cause, but this is just a far cry from anything remotely interesting or well-done.

11.2oz can. Love these things - mild and crushable - lucky to keep finding them

330ml can. Pours hazy yellow, good white froth. Pleasant floral aromatics, a somewhat timid wit profile to taste, light and sessionable but enough of a wit sweetness present to draw an appeal.

Tap at Café de la Gare, The Hague, The Netherlands. Pours orange blonde, medium hazy, with very fine white foam. Aroma is citrus, heart, a little spiced. Body and carbonation are average. Taste is medium sweet, with decent bitterness. Final is fairly short.

33cl Blik van Jumbo. Troebelgele kleur, witte kraag. St. Bernardus-gist, zoet, licht kruidig, hint van citroen, deeg, corianderzaad, hint van kruidnagel, licht bitter. Lichte body. Niet heel anders dan ik me de originele versie herinner. Geen topper in het genre wat mij betreft.

Pours hazy gold into a bowl. White head with little retention recedes to mottle surface. Lemon and coriander aromas. Crisp with earthy lemon peel, wheat and sourdough upfront turning to mild bubblegum and clove in the dry, medium length finish.

Can, 6.0%. Fruity aroma, some coriander. Cloudy golden colour. Very big stable white head. The flavour has a lot of coriander. Slightly sweet. A little yeast and white bread in the finish.

A bit mild for a St. Bernardus brew, with a light grassy front and faint notes of clove and citrus, before esters kick in on the back end. Yeasty finish mixes with a slight grainy sweetness. Just seems…lacking, not quite a wit and not quite a weissbier.
