On 14th Jan 2012 I decided to have a lager/pilsner/helles/light beer evening: a 500ml bottle of this beer was the first I opened. Poured into three tall thin Kolsch glasses it looked just like I remembered it when I visited the brewery back in the last century. Golden body, clear, clean and on top a snow white covering of small bubbles: a typical Kolsch in appearance. The aroma is weak, or understated if being kind, some hop hints and a cereal whiff maybe: otherwise nothing, it gets my usual score of three for a non-smelling lager/pilsner/helles, etc, etc. The taste is crisp and refreshing, difficult to pinpoint flavours but there is a hop element that gives it a sharp tang towards the end of each sip and some malt presence that ensures the hops don’t take over completely. Well balanced and easy to drink, a good start to the evening.

Average Kolsch amongst Cologne’s collection, but still light and enjoyable.
