A “city beer” for Bruges, brewed by one of the city’s local breweries; steinie bottle from Koelschip in Ostend. Medium strong gusher, but more or less manageable. Initially towering high, snow white, irregularly shaped head which quickly collapses to an equally irregular, open moussy ring, on a hazy straw-yellow blonde beer with vague khaki tinge. Aroma delivers what the name promises: lots of actual pineapple, like pineapple juice from a carton or even pineapple slices from a can with syrup, next to Turkish delight, ‘meloenjenever’, white bread dough, apple, chewing gum and bath foam impressions – in all, unusual, but not unpleasant. Sweet onset with crisp souring edges – again, very ‘genuine’ pineapple juice effect, partially covering up banana (even slight bubblegum) and peach notes from the esters; medium carb, soft and notably soapy, wheaty body, bready and doughy but supple and lean. The (sweetened but convincing) pineapple juice flavour remains, while the finish becomes quite chalky, ending with a late, brief dash of leafy hop bitterishness. Smells, looks and tastes like a witbier with sweetened pineapple juice added to it – which is probably not that far from the truth – but, contrary to many other ‘fruit witbiers’ by larger producers, a specific subtype of sweet fruit beers that gained a lot of local popularity some fifteen years ago but has now luckily passed its commercial prime, this is still ‘beery’ and not the ridiculous and sickly sweet soda pop horror we got from e.g. Haacht (Mystic) and Huyghe (Floris). For that reason alone, I cannot but grant it a decent score; I can enjoy this, though probably not for more than one time, and admittedly you will personally have to like the aroma and taste of pineapple juice – if this were apple juice, for example, I probably wouldn’t have liked it as much.
