Mastri Birrai Umbri’s unfiltered red ale is made in Italy according to the Cotta 37 recipe using the traditional top-fermentation technique. The use of roasted malts and chicklings results in its characteristic deep, naturally cloudy copper hue. The ale’s captivating aroma is dominated by mineral and caramelized notes. Its body is smooth and its flavour balanced.

Beautiful bottle promising a ’birra rossa’, which can be anything from an amber lager to a Belgian amber ale. Cheers Stefan! I do not see any mention of spices being used, so I wonder why this is listed as a spice ale here... Thick and regular, coarse, frothy, off-white head over a deep peach blonde beer - clearly not red, not even truly amber, hazy. Weakish aroma of iron, honey, old cookies, vague peanuts, straw, some peach. Spritzy, minerally onset with tingling, lightly souring carbo, overcarbonated even distracting from the actual taste, which is not very impressive to begin with: restrained apricot and apple fruitiness, thinnish body, some lightly honeyish and caramelly maltiness, light sourishness in the finish (perhaps the onset of an infection?) with a touch of dried orange peel and a light, bland, faint leafy hoppiness, not bittering enough. In all, dull and bland, the Italian craft beer movement has spawned many more impressive beers than this.

Bottle shared by a friend, BB 31 07 2016, medium sample. Hazy amber color, short head. Aroma is a bit spicy from yeast, some caramel, bit floral. Bit sweet in taste, slight floral bitterness, bit spicy. Like any belgian amber.

Bottle from an Italian stall in Westfield Stratford as no. 28. Hazy dark amber reddish brown. Some biscuit malt and sweetish fruity malt. Fruity malt in mouth, some light milk chocolate. It’s ok if a little thin. Not much hop on the finish, but ok.

Bottle. Deep amber with plenty of fizz and next to no head. Malty, with a touch of caramel and red berry fruit, hint of leafy hop and gently bitter finish. Inoffensive.

Bottle. Aroma sweetish, apples lightly solventy. Deep golden colour. Taste is thin, watery, apples. After all it is still drinkable. But that is about the best that can be said about it.
