Root Cellar defies categorization. It truly is a beer anomaly. A Strong Ale was laid down in Justin Winery’s “Obtuse” Port barrels for 5 months. Flavors of plum and caramel malt sweetness layer with oak and port to create a wonderful winter warmer. Sourness, developed during aging, brings forth both softness and complexity to this bottle conditioned American Wild Ale.

Bottle, pours a murky dark amber orange with a small tan head. Nose brings out lots of wood, vinous notes and varnish. Flavour brings out leather, wood, varnish and leather. Very cohesive. I enjoy these leathery dark sours. Very nice stuff.

Bottle thanks to Dallas at RBSG Grand Tasting. Pours a hazy brown with small beige head that lasts. The aroma is oak, plum skin, wood. Medium mouth, tart, plum, oak, very good.

750mL bottle courtesy of douglas88. Pours murky dark brown with super tall sort of mocha head. The aroma has pretty bold tart notes at first. After it sets around for a while softer notes of oak, spicy oak and red wine grapes are noticed. The taste is similar with a red wine barrel like tartness giving way to oak notes, spicy notes, some grapes and some maltiness with ever so thin ribbons of caramel candy.

enjoyed during 2011 RBWG pours light brown with a medium tan head. Aroma is vinous, with oak and dark red fruits. Flavor is mellow beery tartness, port, vanilla and wood. This is a great sipper.

750ml bottle from Squatters
Appearance: Pours cloudy dark brown with a reddish tint, a nice sized frothy beige head that sticks around for the entire glass and lots of lacing left on the sides
Aroma: Tart cherries, woody and oak
Taste: Tart fruits, oak barrels, earthy, caramel malts, with a slightly bitter and a dry wine finish
I really enjoyed this beer. It is hard to pin down some of the flavors because they change the warmer the beer gets.
