There is a flavour intensity to our DDH Pales, this one hopped with hand-selected Rakau and Waimea, that we find affirming, yet also mellow and relaxing. A beer not confined by strength and good judgement to the shortest of measures, instead a beer for long and lingering pauses. One such pause during last year’s hop selection trip was the ferry from Picton — hours along the Marlborough Sounds, and across Cook Strait.

Can at home in Hackney - picked up at Clapton Craft. Pours super murky orange-gold with a fluffy white head that fades quickly. Has a pleasant pale bread foundation, some melon, tangerine, low bitterness, a little rind, hints of chalk. Light bodied with fine, delicate carbonation. Finishes with nips of chalky minerality, more melon, tangerine rind, bready pale malts. Grew on me a bit.

Can. Beer Central, Sheffield. Fully murked up, straw gold. Decent Cloudwater swede. Nose has fairly sweaty, dank and resinous hop leaf. Some dried peel. Dried apricot. Creamy malts. Taste has a moderate, pithy, citrus bitterness. A little drying. Light to medium body. Carbonation could benefit less life. Light, slightly astringent bitterness to finish. Ok.
