From its forceful aroma of the fruity essences of pears, apples and grapes to a character hinting at anise, pepper, vanilla and fruits gilded in a powdered sugary glaze. Brewed only once a year on December 6, Helles is aged for a full ten months before bottling. It may be hard to imagine doing much better than this golden, robustly toothsome brew, with a few more years under its belt, it grows in complexity and nuance – proving that not only wine can age magnificently gracefully.

Bottle, 2007 bottling. It’s a rather flat one, just a few beige bubbles gather around the glass. It’s clear and mahogany colored, except if the dredges were poured. The aroma is rather intense and complex. Not as alcoholic as you might think considering the ABV though. Dried fruits, prunes and apricots, port wine, brown sugar, some grass, a touch of caramel and also a faint hint of something soy-like and oxidized. The soy thing was just a faint whiff. It’s very sweet on the palate, rather warming, with very little carbonation. Dried fruits, port wine, caramel and grass and some brown sugar in the flavor. It sort of falls through in the finish though, as it then feels almost cloyingly sweet and warming only, but all the other flavors are there as well, just not as pronounced as in the initial flavor. I must admit I have been storing this one for years just because I didn’t feel like drinking a 14% ABV sweet lager, but I’m glad I did save it for eight years as now it’s quite wonderful. Pity I don’t have more bottles, I’d love to try it with some cheese as well, not only with dried fruits. 151229

Samichlaus Helles 14% A very pretty looking orange amber. The nose is quite a fragrant fruity plum/prunes, malty caramel with some heat. Very rich malt, syrupy brown sugar, some sharp heat, dried prunes in the aftertaste. Super sugary and rich. Some heat burning down your throat. The aftertaste is burnt brown sugar. Very interest wrong but somewhat over the top. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Light brown with no head. Aroma is sweet with sugary dried fruits like dates and raisins. Flavour is similarly sweet. Also with honey and caramel. A bit warming from the alcohol.

On tap at PIB 2015, pours a deep dark brown with a reddish brown and a small beige head. Aroma brings out toasted nuts, dark fruits, and toffee. Flavour is quite sweet, with sugary sweet candied sugar, cotton candy and alcohol. Not too boozy for being 14%. Nicely constructed but rather extreme for drinking in more than tiny samples. Good stuff.

Refrigerated brown bottle poured into a glass. Clear golden with very small white head. Aroma is light oak, medium body, low carbonation, and very little lacing. Taste is rich barrel, mineral malt, and booze heat.

Orange color with small head. Intensely sweet, cognac, apricots. Taste is also intensely sweet and boozy. Not exactly my type of beer. I’m afraid to get Diabetes from drinking this ^^
