33cl bottle from the Sainsbury’s Beer Hunt 2013 range. Cola coloured with a tawny highlight and a ring of beige head; rather musty malty aroma with a touch of coffee; in the mouth there’s some raw sugar, red fruit, and richly roasted chocolate malts; the finish is drier with some coffee and warming alcohol. A rather raw and unsophisticated porter, but very drinkable.

Opaque black - brown beer. Good pale tan head. Palate is light and airy and semi dry. Mild dark malts with some cereal character. Traces of roast and bubblegum ester. Finishes soft with very mellow hops. Quite an engaging porter.

Bottle at home from Sainsbury’s Pour is clear dark brown caramel. Head is loose and reluctant. Aroma is soft roast, choc, cacoa and heavy chalk and mineral. Medium to light body for the style. Flavour is rich choc, some dark fruits. Finish is minerally chalk. Medium choccy duration. Very tasty.

Cask at CASK. It pours darkest brown with a tiny beige head. The nose is roasted malt, light smoke, earth and toast. The taste is roasty, toast, treacle, earth, cola, berry, light jamminess and coffee with a dry finish. Medium body, fine carbonation and light stickiness. Pretty tasty stuff.

Very dark red-brown beer with a thick head. Spicy fruit aroma. The hit on the tongue is bittersweet fruit with a hoppy twang. Finish is bitter mqlt.

Bottled. Near black with a slight tan head. Big, black coffee and chocolate powder notes, followed by a hint of prune sweetness. Dry, lingering finish. very good.

Bottle from Connolly’s Wines, Solihull. The aroma is smoky and peaty. The flavour is medium to strong bitter with lots of liqourice and some dark chocolate. I’d have preferred a richer more flavourful porter, but it was still highly drinkable.

Bottle, Beer Ritz, Leeds. Clear dark brown pour with a meek tan head. Sweet chocolate and a little roast in the nose. Similar flavour., with notes of dark fruit and a little bitterness. Quite lively carbonation. A bit thin. Drinkable but not quite the win.
