Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American aristocracy. It is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops.
After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%.
It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Bottle shared at a RB tasting Den Haag. A weak but slightly malty hoppy aroma. The aroma is malty sharp and very bitter hoppy, but not dry or spicy. A very drinkable beer.

355 ml bottle. Pours a dark orange brown with light head that dissipates quickly. Aromas of brown sugar, sour mash, malts, and alcohol. Flavors of toffee, hops, raisins, and port. Nice but not sufficient to cover the alcohol.

Nice to see a Barleywine in a smaller bottle. 10.3% ABV on front label. Pours a slightly hazy, darker amber colour with a light-beige bubbly head, average retention and a bit of lace. Aromas are quite sweet, with caramel malt, apple pie and mild hops. Thick-bodied, smooth and oily mouthfeel, with no burning at all, but a nice warming feeling. Not as sweet tasting as some, so goes down quite well. Lots of different dried fruits for flavours, burnt sugars, toffee, with mild bitterness from the hop. Finding this one very well-balanced to be not too sweet, not too hoppy and affordable in a great format at the LCBO.

Bottle at JF’s (from Bitter Virtue) 28/10/12. Slightly obscured golden amber with a thin white head that soon clears to the edges. Nose comprises dark fruits, sweet caremalised sugars, light nutiness, touch of booze. Taste follows with sweet caramel, malt, toffee, booze. Full bodied with limited carbonation leading to a dry and sweet finish.

Bottle, many thanks to my Summer Secret Santa. Hazy amber orange color with no head. Aroma of ripe berries, peach, caramel, wood, alcohol. Taste, starts extremely sweet, sticky, dark fruits, grapefruit bitter end. Alcohol is clearly noticeable. Good.

Aroma: Caramel is definitely sticking out a lot with notes of cherry, field berries and wood. Appearance is copper / brown, lightly cloudy, small head but good lacing and medium lasting. Flavors are delicate caramel and cherry. Lightly sparkling, thick and round texture close to a liquor. Alcohol is a bit too harsh and persistent at finish. A good and acceptable barley wine. Excellent old cheese and chocolate pairing. Could easily replace a port.

På DØE festivalen: en nydelig barley wine på 10,1%, bitterhet og sødme fint balansert. Antydning av sherry og honning. Et koseøl.
