Bottle. Booths, Ilkley. Poured into a Delirium Noel glass. (It’ll not be long). Clear, chestnut brown. Film of beige head. Vine fruit, and light roasted coffee grinds. Some nutty milk chocolate. Hint of liquorice. Smells good. Taste is fruity, vinous sweet. Soft, ripe fruit skin, bitterness. A bit earthy. Smooth palate, that’s feels under the ABV. Finishes fruit stone bitter. Nice one. A bit earthy maybe, but I did like this.

BrewDog’s modern approach to the old wee heavy (Scotch) style, at their new pub in Brussels, thanks to Craftmember for sharing. Lightly lacing, creamy, dense, egg-white head of medium thickness on top of a misty, very dark burgundy coloured beer, almost blackish in appearance (and therefore darker than usual for the style), but not quite. Pleasant, clever and elegant aroma of candied cherries, home made caramel, dried banana, ’raisin bread’, beef stock, bayleaf, roasted shallot, hint of black olives, medium dry sherry. Sweet and candyish, but nowhere cloying onset, baked banana and raisins all around, soft carbo with a full, very smooth, soft mouthfeel, resinous, caramelly maltiness with a chocolatey edge and some honeyish sweetness, pleasantly bittersweet ending with toasted malt bitterishness and subtle, earthy hops allowing the malt character to shine, as is custom for the style; some subtle umami-like flavours linger as well. More complex, more ’upholstered’ and more ambitious than the average Scotch from more traditional breweries, but still with a great deal of respect to this old style. Probably among the best wee heavies I had so far.

Aroma of sweet barley and mintiness, very unique and appealing in an odd way. Has nice head and a black-burgundy body. Flavour is sweet barley notes but toned down so not to be cloying. Medium finish. It’s a very drinkable brew.

330 ml bottle. Pours a very dark clear brown with a light tan head of big bubbles that dissipate quickly. Aromas of sweet barley malts and burnt sugar. Flavors of molasses, light licorice, a bit of nuts and more sweet malts. Warm. Very nice for a sweetie.

Mmmh, hit me Baby one more time. Amazing Grace!

Can. Dark brown body with a thin beige head. Faint lacing. Aroma of treacle, honey, brown sugar and chocolate digestives. Flavour of crème brûlée, burnt sugar, caramel and flat Coca-Cola. Medium body with a sticky mouthfeel. Soft fizz. Sweet and tasty.
