The light, refreshing character of our award-winning golden ale is distinguished by its subtle elderflower aroma, reminiscent of a summer’s evening. Champion is particularly rewarding when served chilled. On a balmy evening in Stanpit Marsh, a cool breeze blows and a calm encompasses the vast reserve. Amongst the wild horses, you may see Golden Champion, a headstrong but loyal stallion who enjoys the warm days grazing in th fields. The subtle elderflower aromas of this delicately floral brew are reminiscent of a summer’s evening. This divine all-rounder is a great companion for smoky, chargrilled chicken and peppery rocket salad.

Brilliant white foamy head stayed on a lively golden body. Fruity aroma with pale malt. Medium bodied, nicely carbonated with a soft cloying back. Fruity berries, wine gums, sweet hops & hints of apple with a jam like finish. Nice one.

Bottle from Waitrose. Label says: The Golden Champion 4.5%. Pours a clear golden colour with a thin to medium sized throthy white head. Light notes of floral and citrus on the nose but not a lot else. Taste has a lot more floral notes, bready with elderflower, citrus lemon, a touch of caramel, biscuit, ginger and peppery spice. Very subtle gentle bitterness throughout. Quite complex. Thin to medium body with a smooth oily mouthfeel. Nice beer actually and also a little unusual which is good.

Bottle from Co-Op, Kentish Town on 5th March 2021. Pours clear amber with loose, pale tan foam soon decaying to a ring and film, with scant lacing. Leafy hop aromas with caramel malts. Grassy and leafy hoppiness in-mouth with sweet and nutty malts, both flavour foci prevailing through the finish. Zingy mouthfeel and a light to medium body.

Bottle from local Asda – now 4.5% Pours a golden yellow with a generous but transient white head. Some malty notes in the aroma, but it’s only slight. In the mouth there is an initial sweetness followed quickly by grainy malts, citrus hops and corncob. Finish varies from mouthful to mouthful ! Sometimes sweet, sometimes dry, sometimes ginger – weird ! The more I tase, the more I like it.

500ml bottle @ 4.5%. Lovely floral aroma. Pours with a light head but not too frothy and disappears quickly with slight lacing. I first get a sweet floral/elderberry flavour, then a mild earthy hop and malt with a slight bitter note at the end although smooth throughout. The flavour is more complex than that sounds but I’m not yet experienced enough to pick up some of the more subtle flavours. I can safely say thought that I don’t taste the gingerbread note mentioned previously. Very nice ale.

Bottle at the Raj in New Haw. Malty faintly spiced aroma. Light gold. Foamy white head. Light bitter. A hint of citrus sour. Malt base. Light bodied. Thin. Average-fizzy carbonation. Dry finish. Nice enough if bland.

Bottle. Poured deep amber with an average sized off-white head. Aroma of malt, caramel, hop, citrus and notes of light elderflower. Medium sweetness, moderate bitterness. Medium body, slight oily and watery texture, soft carbonation. One of H&W better ones.
