500 ml bottle, as Allendale Black Grouse Oaked Porter, from Gulating Ølutsalg, Stavanger. ABV is 4%. Malts are pale, amber, crystal, wheat, chocolate and cara. Hops are Target, Fuggles and Bramling Cross. IBU is 17. Dark brown colour, nearly black. Moderate beige head. Aroma of roast malts, chocolate and mild coffee, hints of oak. The flavour is mid between dry and sweet, with the same elements as the aroma, a hint of caramel. Very moderate hops, a little more would not hurt.

Cask at Smithfield, Derby Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a small cream head. A strong aroma of vanilla and liquorice. In the mouth the texture is creamy but a bit watery as well. Taste is mainly dark fruits, caramel and malts with hints of coffee and chocolate. A fruity finish to round things off. Doesn’t really live up to its early promise.

Bottle from Gulating. Deep amber body with a small, tan head. Aroma of dark, mild roasted malt, chocolate, some brown sugar, toast and a bit nutty. Very smooth flavor, soft, roasted dark malt, nice, dark chocolate, toffee, bread, hint of wood and dark fruit. Medium body, actually very balanced for 4% ABV beer and smooth aftertaste. Very easy drinkable, tasty, quite complex and impressive balance for a 4% beer. No cheating with lactose, this is quite impressive.

Bottle from Rheged. Appearance - opaque black with a generous off white head. Loads of small bubbles and it disappears quite quickly. Nose - dark chocolate digestives. Light smoke too. Taste - more dark chocolate and some charcoal and smoke again. Palate - close to medium bodied. Creamy yet crunchy middle section. Dry smoky finish. Overall - enjoyable.

500ml bottle. Darkest brown colour with ruby glimmer and small, bubbly, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, beige head. Minimally roasty, dark malty aroma with weak oaky overtones, a touch of toffee, coffee and vanilla. Taste is minimally roasty and nuttily dark malty, diluted hints of toffee, coffee and oak, subtle caramel sweetness. A bit anaemic.

Taste of soft roast, some sweet dark choc malts, good flavour for abv
Palate - Very soft carb, medium light body, light sweet, soft bitter roast. Finish of soft roast
