Dedicated to Spanish author Juan de la Cueva, who, in 1575, wrote of a Mexican dish that combined seedless chipotles with beer: Chipotle Ale is based on Rogue’s Oregon Golden Ale, but delicately spiced with smoked chipotle chile peppers. Deep golden in color with a tight head, rich malty aroma, delicately smooth and crisp flavor, and subtle chipotle chili finish. Formerly known and packages as Mexicali Rogue, Chipotle Ale is created from Northwest Harrington, Klages, and Maier Munich Malts; Willamette and Cascade hops; and Smoked Jalapeno (Chipolte) Peppers. Chipotle Ale is targeted for spring release and available in a 22-ounce bottle and on draft. Blend it with Rogue Chocolate Stout and create a Mole’ black and tan!

This is a beer that needs a good food pairing. And I found it at Bobby Flay’s Mesa Grill in Manhattan. The nuevo southwestern cusiine blended perfectly with what is basically a pale ale dominated by chipotle. Which works, in context.

650ml bottle from the lickbow.
Right off the bat, the aroma is quite interesting. A mix of rich smoke, but a good dose of spicy chilli. The chipotle is really present, im surprised. The flavor is more of the chipotle, followedmby some light bacon, sausage notes. Very interesting! Light bitterness in the fnish, but the spice hangs on, and tickles my throat. I loved it! My wife loathed it! Haha

22oz bottle. Wow. Really cool beer. Rogue gets no fanfare, but still make some excellent stuff...this being a prime example. Smoky enough to be a Rauchbier for sure. Super clean body. Great smoked tones, deep vegetal peppery tones, hints and nuances of heat, but never overboard. Shows some serious finesse, body is clean and drinkable. Beyond cool that they make all the ingredients themselves. Really well done smoked pepper beer.

From Dec 2005

Poured from bottle(room temp) a nice amber with a huge head that settled down after a while but remained throughout.

The smell was malty..can't say any of the peppers made it to my nose.

The taste was very malty and then notes of "heat" made their presence and lingered right through the aftertaste.

This is a very different kind of beer for me and though I "feel" that this must be one of the better examples of the style, I have to think the style is not for me. Try it and find out for yourself. ;^)

From old tasting notes. Labeled as "Rogue Mexicali Rogue Ale". Hazy gold color. Malty bean and bacon aroma. Smooth, smoky malt flavor with hints of bacon and chipotle. Subtle hot finish and aftertaste.

The base beer is pretty good, hints of belgian styles underneath. But the spices are quite peppery, tabaco-like, and smoky. Probably won't buy again, but worth a try. Bottle from sobeys.

Bomber from Total Wine, Gainesville. Slightly hazy deep amber with a small beige head. Aroma of citrus, smoke, and pepper. Flavor is definitely smoky, followed by some citrus, and finally some pepper heat. Kinda bland... was expecting more.

Tap@Taphouse, Copenhagen - dark golden pour with off-white head. Aroma and taste starts sweet malty with notes of caramel, but then the spicy peppery taste kicks in, some heat building, some smokey backing, touch to spicy sweet to drink in high amounts for me, but sample was interesting enough to try nonetheless.
