A beer which really needs no introduction. Arguably the most decorated beer in recent British brewing history. A rich, complex, dark ruby porter from an 1872 recipe. It has an old port nose, coffee and bitter chocolate flavours from four malts including finest Maris Otter and English hops. Supreme Champion Beer of Britain.

Cask at the GBBF 2015 after my iPod battery died but I have photographic evidence from my digital camera that I had this beer... Dark black like black coffee with wisps of tan foam around the edges. Smooth mouthfeel giving roasted coffee, chocolate and sugary/molasses sweetness. Good stuff but by this point I was definitely the worse for wear.

Cask at the Walsall Camra, beer festival 2015. Poured a clear dark mahogany with a round bubbly light tan head. The aroma is roasty, light smoke malt. The flavour is moderate to strong bitter with a smooth toasty burnt treacle liqourice bitter palate and a long bitter finish. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Nice enough but way too bitter and smoky for me. I almost called the fire brigade!

Cask at Bankers Draft (JDW), Bedford. Dark brown with a loose tan head. Astringent aroma with liquorice and coffee in the scent. Taste us sweet at first. Almost reminiscent of a coffee-laden breakfast stout... then the sourness kicks in. A rounded and appreciable experience. Not sure if this would be slightly better in a non-JDW outlet.

On cask at the Haymarket. Appearance - pretty close to opaque black with just the tiniest of red chinks around the glass. Big creamy head. Nose - very dark chocolate and caramel. Just a hint of coffee. Taste - caramel melded with liquorice. Some dark chocolate comes through on the end. Palate - medium to full bodied with a creamy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - very enjoyable.
