A beer which really needs no introduction. Arguably the most decorated beer in recent British brewing history. A rich, complex, dark ruby porter from an 1872 recipe. It has an old port nose, coffee and bitter chocolate flavours from four malts including finest Maris Otter and English hops. Supreme Champion Beer of Britain.

On cask, from old notes. Full sweet malts, chocolate, molasses, but also very well burnt with coffee notes. Very dark, wonderful and pretty strong too.

Cask @ Sir Norman Rae, Shipley. Black with a thin off-white creamy head. Has a lovely smooth milky roasted malt character with just about the right sweetness.

On cask at Cross Scythes, Norton Lees - Pitch black body with a beige lacing foamy head. Nose is roasted with heavy aromas of freshly ground coffee, espresso and dark chocolate. Taste is roasted, malty with full flavours of strong, black coffee, some chocolate and liquorice. Full body, a bit syrupy. The bitterness comes through in the finish. Gorgeous!!!!

Cask at the Back of Beyond, Reading. Wondered if this would live up to its reputation, and it does- just about. It’s black with no head. Sumptuous rich mouthfeel. Chocolate, tobacco and leather up front with a plum-like fruitiness following, giving more than a hint of port. The alcohol shows through as you drink more and by the end is really a little too obvious. Possibly a bit on the sweet side too, but a decent porter nevertheless.

Cask at the Watford Beer Festival 2013. Poured black with a rocky beige head. Smoky aroma with dark malt and burnt sugar. Full mouth feel. Flavours or orange rind, spice and toasted malt. Coffee notes on the palate with peat and dark fruit.

Cask gravity at the Watford beer fest 2013. Aroma is burnt caramel, woody campfire. Dark caramel, ruby red small halo head. Flavour is salty oyster, roast malt. Light choc. Decent porter.

Bottle from Bier Huis, Ossett. Very dark, clear, chestnut colour. Almost headless. Aroma is dark, unripe fruits. Roast coffee grinds, some milk chocolate. There’s a light hop character too. Taste is muscovado sugar sweetness, with a woody dryness following along. Smooth palate, but with a bitter, long, dry, roasty finish. Very nice.

From cask. Pours pitch black with a small tan head. Aroma is roasted malty, liqourice. Smooth toffee malty and soid liqourice note. Medium dry, light sweet liqourice impression. Roasted malty and dry malty. Smooth liqourice finish.

500ml bottle shared at home. Dark brown pour with good off-white head. Roasted malt and molasses, dark fruit, plums, treacle. All good stuff. nice to have a beer that isn’t shouting about hops. Well made porter.
