A beer which really needs no introduction. Arguably the most decorated beer in recent British brewing history. A rich, complex, dark ruby porter from an 1872 recipe. It has an old port nose, coffee and bitter chocolate flavours from four malts including finest Maris Otter and English hops. Supreme Champion Beer of Britain.

Medium beige head. Nearly opaque black body goes deep dark brown body. Earthy chocolatey aroma with burnt mealy notes. Dry-sweet earthy cocoa taste with burnt wooden notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Dryish earthy chocolatey aftertaste with burnt nougat notes. The flavour is very vivid, but not very complex. Still interesting. (0.5l bottle, from Clarkeโ€™s, Whitby.)

Cask at the Sussex Arms, Twickenham Green - 16/11/12. Light black with a thin tan head that retains well. Nose is slightly muted, roast malts, molasses, liqourice. Taste comprises roast malts, bitter dark chocolate, touch of smoke, liqourice, dark fruits and sugars, a little treacle. Full end of medium bodied with fine carbonation leading to a dry finish. Ok porter.

Cask @ Paramount, Manchester (as Paramount Porter)
Appearance - Black, very thin tan white head.
Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate.
Fairly complex taste of roasted malts, sweet dark caramel malts, espresso, some fruityness, bit earthy, bit unrefined though.
Medium body. Finish of roast coffee lingers a bit too long.
Nice porter but a bit rough round the edges.

Cask at GBBF 2011, Day 2. This beer really did it for me. Pours dark brown with a bubbly, tan head. Rich cocoa nose, some roasted malt. Delicious flavor, rich and well-rounded dark cocoa, brown sugar, great roastiness. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Light warming finish, light smoke, dark roast, dry mocha. Really great.

Cask at GBBF 2011. It pours opaque black, with a decent bubbly light tan head. The nose is varnish, cardamom, sage, earth, coffee and lots of roasted malt. The taste is sweet caramel, roasted malt, coffee, salted liquorice, pepper, spice, astringency, burnt malt and bitter chocolate, with a dry-roasty finish. Full body and soft carbonation. A tasty porter.

Cask, 6.5% as Paramount Porter. Sweet liquorice aroma, perhaps a hint of smoke. Almost black colour, hint of red. Creamy tan head. The flavour has a lot of sweet liquorice. I also get some roast barley, Guinness style. Distinct coffee aftertaste. Could have done with a little less alcohol IMO.
