A beer which really needs no introduction. Arguably the most decorated beer in recent British brewing history. A rich, complex, dark ruby porter from an 1872 recipe. It has an old port nose, coffee and bitter chocolate flavours from four malts including finest Maris Otter and English hops. Supreme Champion Beer of Britain.

Cask@ The Knott Bar, Manchester. Dense dark brown looks with a lingering mid sized tan head and some decent lacing. Enticing aroma with some roasted character evident in addition to notes of nettle, booze and chocolate. Smooth, rich and very tasty flavour which had great poise, and showed similar qualities to the nose along with some fruitiness and hop towards the finish. Hugely drinkable kick ass porter.

On tap at GBBF. Opaque black brown porter. Sharpish and sour. Mild coffee and roasted malt. Mild hoppy finish with a grapefruit aftertaste. A little to edgy to be great. 2.9

Bottle. Clear deep brown beer, untidy bubbly pale tan head. Palate is smooth and fairly dry with good fine carbonation. The dark malts are slightly roasty and carry a little dry coffee and mild cream. Trace of citric hop and then more obvious bitterness, but itโ€™s never harsh. Finishes smooth and semi dry with bitterish dark chocolate lingering on. Decent.

Cask-conditioned at Mr Foleyโ€™s Cask Ale House, Leeds 23/06/09. Dark mahogany with a slight tan head. Big caramel and coffee aroma. Flavour started with some sweet, milk chocolate before roastiness kicked in, leading to a warming alcohol and moderately bitter finish. Excellent.

Half pint, hand-pulled cask at GBBF. Appealing, dark-ruby body. Missing head. Coffee malt to the nose. More taste of coffee in flavour supported by anise and silky chocolate. Underlying alcohol hints. Quite well made porter with a pleasant palate (shared with Geir, 08.08.2008).
