A beer which really needs no introduction. Arguably the most decorated beer in recent British brewing history. A rich, complex, dark ruby porter from an 1872 recipe. It has an old port nose, coffee and bitter chocolate flavours from four malts including finest Maris Otter and English hops. Supreme Champion Beer of Britain.

Cask@GBBF2008. Deep amber colour, small creamy brown head. Aroma is coffee, smoked wood, some roasted malts, vanilla and mild alcohol. Flavour is roasted malts, dark fruits, smoked wood and peat. All in an excellent balance.

Cask at Manchester Winter ale festial 08 ... Deep dark brown ... smokey roast woody malts ... smooth very chocolaty ... some bitterness... some coffeee ... little drying in linger.

Cask/gravity at Ipswich beer festival 23 Sep 2006. Almost black coloured. Aroma of chocolate and roastedness. A small off-white head. Strong and rich flavour of more chocolate, fruit and coffee. Some bitterness in the finish. Well rounded.

(500 ml bottle at Delirium Café in Gothenburg) Very dark deep red color, tan head. Scent is smoke and burnt rubber. Very sharp bitterness, unpleasant. Old stale cold coffee. Old rug carpet tounge and mouth feel. Dry old oak palate. Was my bottle old or something, how can this get good ratings?

(Cask at GBBF, London, 2 Aug) Colour is pitch black with pale brown foamy head. Nose is roasted with heavy aromas of freshly ground coffee, espresso, dark chocolate, soy sauce and tar. Taste is raosted, malty with full flavours of strong, black coffee, some chocolate, tar and liquorice. Full body. The bitterness comes through in the finish when the other flavours give way for a lovely hop character, and it is very bitter (probably with som help from the roasted malt). Complex! Absolutely lovely. In my opinoin, the best beer at the GBBF this year.

Cask conditioned at Merton Beer Festival Fri July 7th 2006. Very dark beer in fact black with barely a head but what there was appeared beigeish in colour. Roasted coffee bean aroma with a hint of bitter chocolate, flavours are much the same as well but this really is the Geoff Capes of the Porter world and takes no prisoners. Great bitterness follows and malty flavours sneak through every so often, along with their July Morning this was a storming beer from Eastwood and Sanders.

Bottled. Black, nearly opaque, no head. Tarry nose with a dash of blood. Dryish woith solid body. So roasty it turns resiny with metallic edges. Some plums and salt. Like listening to your favourite somg played through a distorted amplifier.

Cask@26th Burton upon Trent Beer Festival. Very black beer with a strongly coffee aroma and a strong, dry and very coffee like flavour. Overall a nice dry coffee tasting beer.

Cask at GBBF 2005 Dark brown. Tar and chewy malt on nose, liquorice, burnt malt in mouth. Very tarry with a thick finish. Re-rate. Cask handpull at Ship & Mitre, Liverpool. Wonderful beer. Black beer, thin dark beige head. Deep flavours, incredible aroma of dark malts, charcoal and some dark fruit. Full and velvety in mouth if a tad sour with long finish. Excellent beer . Some sour dark plum/damson fruit

[Cask at Volunteers Arms, GBBF 2004] A red-brown beer with no head. The aroma is very sweet with notes of caramel, roasted coffee, and chocolate. The flavor is of roasted malt, coffee, and alcohol.
