500ml dark brown bottle poured into a Westmalle Chalice and the last bit into a Palm tulip glass (december 2008). True black in colour, the foaming tan head fell away very quickly to just a weak collar and a wispy scum. The aroma was dark chocolate and roasted ground coffee beans, very pleasant. The taste mirrors the smell, not as dry as some English Stouts but it isn’t a sweet stout either, just about right for my tastebuds in the Stout stakes. A good feel to it, rich and with some body. Not rich, as the label claims, but better than a lot. Hook Norton really let you down, this stout is no different, a good example of an English Stout.

(Gravity cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 25 Nov 2011) Black colour with brief head. Malty, roasted nose with chocolate, coffee and dark bread. Malty, roasted taste with notes of chocolate, coffee, dark bread and a generous coffee bitterness coming through in a finish with a gentle sweetness. Medium body, velvety mouthfeel. Well balanced and highly drinkable. Very nice.

Take 2 - Cask @ JDW Muckle Cross, Elgin
Black, ruby edges, creamy thick tan head, good lacing
Aroma - roasted malts, plain chocolate
Taste - rich roasted malts, bitter plain chocolate, dark caramel, touch of milk sugars, earthy roast, some yeast balanced with some rich dark quite sweet chocolate malts, quite complex
Palate - soft carb, medium body, quite viscous. Finish - bit dry, rich finish, sweetish dark malts, bitter chocolate malts, some mocha in the linger, lots of flavour
Overall - good rich stout, lots of flavour, just a little bit of a roughness on the palate though, but overall it’s a well made stout

100th rating. Bottle from Tesco 17/08/11 6/4/7/3/14
Appearance - Black, ruby edges. Large, rocky tan head. Good lacing.
Aroma - Roasted malt, bitter plain chocolate.
Taste - Burnt and roasted malts, some sweetness in the background, chocolate, slight roast coffee.
Palate - Intially sweet and bitter roast, then bitterness takes over to a lingering roast finish. Smooth, milky texture in mouth.
Overall - A good stout, but the cask version as I recall is better.

Assuming this is the bottle conditioned version, as the neck label states "CAMRA says this is real ale" - also, opens with a loud pop and pours incredibly foamy, with a bit of yeast coming out at the bottom of the pour - looks awesome - huge head - served at cellar temp- nose is dry, woody, softly herbal, light chocolate, even a bit of pepper - taste is dry, woody, slightly tart - A bit oaky and tannic on the tale end - lovely notes of bitter chocolate and dried herbs throughout - even a bit spicy through the middle - lingering dry roastiness in the finish - this is an excellent stout - if this is truly a few years old, I am astonished that I detect almost no signs of age - bravo.

Cask at the Back of Beyond (JDW), Reading. A deep, polished mahogany colour with a thin, loose, tan head; the aroma has richly roasted malts and some nuts, chocolate and caramel; the taste is sweet and nutty to start but then becomes drier with touches of smoke and vanilla; the finish is dry and bitter with a lasting impression of burnt toast. An excellent draught stout.
