From BA: This has been a favorite German beer of mine for a long time. The two 0.33 litre bottles this review is based on, were bought in Cochem (a wine town on the Mosel River) last July. I have been saving them for a rainy day, today it rained! The Best By Date was 10th November 2006, I had them on 29th August 2006. Amber, no other colour, this beer is amber, the head does not hang around for long, so get in there fast! No great smell, a smooth maltiness maybe, but nothing to get excited about. The taste is better than almost any other German Bock, not over heavy, but you can feel the power and hop character (Hallertau according to my books), as you attack the beer. Obviously some of the really heavy, dark Bocks have incredible flavours, but we are not talking about those sort of Bocks, this is a delicate May time Bock, not a jet black monster Bock. I had these two in a Belgian ’Forbidden Fruit’ Bowl, not ideal, but close enough to ensure the aroma (not that is has a powerful one) and taste were there to enjoy. Very drinkable with a good firm aftertaste, I will always buy some if I see it on my travels, I recommend that you do the same.

Clear yellow to orange colour with a small white head that’s quickly gone. Smells yeast, grass, orange peel, malts. Tastes very malty, some hay, grassy and a little bit bitter. Nothing crazy. Great carbo, medium body.

Boks 0,5l fra REWE i Göttingen. Drukket hjemme 15 Mar 12. Gyldenbrunt. KI=8

Green glass 33cl bottle pours clear copper with thin loose off white head. The aroma is sweet with a corn like sense as well as a mix of pear sweetness and biscuit like grainy maltiness. The taste offers a range of notes moving from caramel covered pears and apples to grainy malts, sweet biscuit like malts, mild levels of spicy hops and more caramel malt infused esteriness into the finish. Pretty solid bock like beer but a bit too much on the sweet side for my taste.

Ett lite spretigt öl. Ljus klar vätska vilket inte hindrar den från att vara mycket maltig och söt och besk. Alla smakerna är dessutom ganska råa och ofärdiga.

Bottled, from Mitra. Clear golden color, short frothy off-white head. Aroma of grainy pilsener malt together with typical German hops. Strange, but it’s always so obvious when you have a pale German brew. They all tend to have similar aroma’s. Most of the times, it’s pretty bad, but sometimes I’m actually really looking forward to such an aroma. Quite sweet taste, bit brackish, metallic. Slightly bitter finish. It lacks crispness. Almost cloying sweetness. Too sweet I think.
