Hazy dark red brown beer. Tidy pale tan head. Crisp semi dry palate. Dark toffee. Molasses. Sour dried fruits. Minerally crisp finish. The comboination of molasses and sour fruits doesn’t work for me at all but I can see others liking it.

New Beer Distributors, NY 330ml ($3): This bottle, which is called Abbey Ale (Klosterol seems to have the same meaning), has a listed abv of 8.5%, so I am not sure that this should be considered the same beer. In any case, it pours a brownish colour with very minimal head. Aroma is dark fruit and a wee bit of booze. Taste has some roasted malts in there. It is comparatively light for the relative size of the beer. This is an OK beer, but not a great Belgian Ale.

Bottle from Bruisin Ales. Pours darkly ruddy with a creamy/bubbly beige head. Aroma is musty yeast with a faint chocolate background. Near full bodied. Flavor is musty chocolate with some coffee hints. Musty/earthy/yeasty. Dry. Then not. Then dusty dry. Then not. A little organic sulfur. Back to somewhat chocolate. Have no idea what is going on with this. Another challenging beer.

330 ml bottle received as a Christmas present by Daniel. Consumed on January 2. Pours hazy chestnut brown with a creamy white head that slowly dissipates without leaving much trace. Smell is very sweet and yeasty with alcohol, some bread, raisins, prunes, apples and liquorice. Taste is sweet, slightly sour and quite vinous with dark sweet fruits, spices, hints of bread, yeast and caramel. Finish is slightly sweet and slightly bitter with lots of chocolate. I didn’t expect it to taste so good considering the not very impressive smell.

Bottle. Murky brown color, medium tan head, solid lacing. Aroma of brown bread drenched in caramel. Taste is very malty, rising black bread dough, light spice. Good example of a dubbel, I think.

Bottle. It pours a clear, amber body under a dense, finger-thick beige head. Caramel and sweetness on the nose, some diacetyl and a touch of alcohol, which is quite understandable considering the ABV. The flavor has sweetish notes, dried fruits, caramel and white sugar, as well as some alcohol and hints of spices. Smooth, warming mouthfeel with pleasant carbonation. Medium to full body. Spiced and warming finish. A quite tasteful one, not world class, but pleasant and drinkable. 110527
