HO-HO-HO with this seasonal Christmas special from Medvedgrad! A really nice dark bock. Obviously high on alcohol but it’s nicely balanced and masked well with rich aroma of dark fruits and berries. Body is full and thick with creamy texture. Medium carbonation level, lovely smell... Truly, a fine example of this style. Shame it’s seasonal only, would love to have this year-round. I better stock up on it now, then. :) Recommended!

Bottle shared thanks to Santa Gurthnar. Very dark brown with big dark beige head. Figs, caramel, toffee, milk chocolate, light Indian spices, burnt wood, brown sugar. Under medium sweet and light bitter finish. Medium bodied with slick syrupy feel. Quite good for the style.

Bottle brought by Marko, thanks! Very easy drinking, tasty. A bit of an alcohol bite, but the warming sensation is in pleasant intensity. Mostly roasty, with some dried fruits, plums. Good.

On tap at Medvedgrad Ilica, Zagreb. Pours black with creamy beige head. Sweet, caramel, dried fruits, smooth carbonation, not easy drinkable. Wasn’t thrilled with their other seasonal brews, but this turned out to be pleasant surprise. Hope they’ll make it this year as well.

Dec ’14. On tap at their place. It poured hazy, dark reddish-brown body with smaller latte head. Mostly very lightly roasted aroma, dark dried fruits, caramelized sugar, touch of bread/grain. Served a bit too cold so needed some time to open up. Flavor was only lightly sweet, which made it extremely balanced for a tricky dark bock. Somewhat complex with secondary notes like wood and cocoa. Otherwise caramel, sugar, grainy in some nice way but also lightly bitter herbal hoppy spices. Full bodied so it seemed even stronger in ABV, with very pleasant and long caramel, raisins, even cocoa finish. Slightly warming too, I guess that’s why they didn’t want to push these 18 plato beyond 7% ABV, although they managed to subdue sweetness with lightly roasted malt. A well made Dunkler Bock, very nice and pleasant! Hope to see it next year, too!

Draught at Medvedgrad brewpub, Ilica, Zagreb. Had it in 2013, they brewed it for this season again. Dark brown with beige head. Needed some time for aroma to develop. Nicely toasty and roasty. Caramel and dried fruits, raisin-like aroma. Sweet, some alcohol, but drinkable, full body. Very nice and complete Dunkler Bock.

On tap at Pivnica Mali Medo, Zagreb. Whoa...three new beers within just few months from Medvedgrad. This one is Christmas one and it’s really pleasant surprise. Dark brown coloured, medium to big beige (even pale brown) head, fruity caramel nose with hint of alcohol. Slight roasted malt (pretty sweet), caramel and dried fruits with notes of alcohol and fruits in the finish. Not bad at all, one of the better Croatian dark beers I’ve tried recently.
