“Duchesse Cherry“ is as its name suggests a cherry beer. Brewed only with real Belgian cherries (no flavor enhancers or cherry extracts). The fruit comes from the region of Sint-Truiden in Limburg (Belgium).
Unlike the more famous Kriek beers, the basic beer of the "Duchess Cherry" is not a Lambic. but a Flanders red ale of mixed fermentation. This beer has a top fermented base and is then matured in oak casks where it undergoes a second wild fermentation. The tannins in the foeders (very large barrel used for the storage of great Bordeaux wines) give the Duchess Cherry its sweet, fruity, refreshing and bittersweet taste.
Once the base beer is ready, the master brewer adds 20 Kg of "Kriek Gorsem" (Belgian sour cherries) per 100 liters to the beer. For 6 months, the beer macerates with the cherries. The cherries give a fresh and fruity taste to the beer which has a sweet and sour base. After 24 months of process, the beer is ready to be filtered and racked .

(Keg at Black Door, 20210305) The beer poured ruby red and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had tartness, cherries and candy sugar. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were tartness, cherries, cinnamon, malts, sweetness and bitterness. Aftertaste had cherries, sweetness and bitterness. A pleasant combination of cherries and lightly sour base beer.

Bottle picked up from Belgiuminabox webshop Antwerp Belgium and consumed at home Friday 12th December 2020 listening to Steve Lamaq on 6Music cooking Boti Burgh Malai from The Curry Guy. Pours dark cherry red, an initial sweetness pops through but then it moves to a steady tartness and tanginess, it's good, not sure that it's any better or worse than the original, however it's cool that there is a variant.

Draft. A deep red beer with a lazing pinkish head. The aroma has notes of cherries, funk, wood, brett, vinegar, and malt. The flavor is sour with notes of brett, wood, cherries, funk, vinegar, and malt, leading to a tart finish.

Rerate. Lots of cherry juice, cherry candy, lemon, red apple, marzipan. Sour cherry, lemon & candy in the taste. Unripe red apple. Some lactic acid, marzipan and tannins in the finish. Acidic. Thin, bit sticky body. Still enjoyable, but can't beat the original.
Original rating: 8/8/8/6/.5=7.6. 4 July 2020. At Heeren van Liedekercke. Cheers to Pieter's birthday! Hazy red with a huge, lasting, foamy, pink head. Aroma of sour cherry, cherry jam, vinegar, balsamico, lemon acid, vague nail polish. Taste has sweet-sour cherry, raspberry, red fruit jam, fluffy doughy malty feel, acidic vinegar building into the quite tart, acidic, lemony, yet fruity finish. Medium body, oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Love this!

330 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet Verksgt. ABV is 6.8%. Deep red colour, moderate pink head. Lovely aroma of sour cherries, notes of cherry kernels and marzipan. The flavour has the same elements, medium sour and quite sweet, hints of oak and brettanomyces.
