“Duchesse Cherry“ is as its name suggests a cherry beer. Brewed only with real Belgian cherries (no flavor enhancers or cherry extracts). The fruit comes from the region of Sint-Truiden in Limburg (Belgium).
Unlike the more famous Kriek beers, the basic beer of the "Duchess Cherry" is not a Lambic. but a Flanders red ale of mixed fermentation. This beer has a top fermented base and is then matured in oak casks where it undergoes a second wild fermentation. The tannins in the foeders (very large barrel used for the storage of great Bordeaux wines) give the Duchess Cherry its sweet, fruity, refreshing and bittersweet taste.
Once the base beer is ready, the master brewer adds 20 Kg of "Kriek Gorsem" (Belgian sour cherries) per 100 liters to the beer. For 6 months, the beer macerates with the cherries. The cherries give a fresh and fruity taste to the beer which has a sweet and sour base. After 24 months of process, the beer is ready to be filtered and racked .

Pours ruby red with a small head. There's an aroma of tart cherries, malt, and oak. It tastes of sweet malt, cherries, and nicely balanced tartness. Medium bodied. Very good.

Beautiful, clear deep ruby red colour, good frothy pink head, dissipates slowly leaving almost no lacing. Almost vinous aroma, cherries, wood, vanilla, syrup. Rather sharpish onset, followed by a fruity medium sweet and sour taste, cherries, woody, vanilla, becomes more en more sweet pushing back the sourness. Medium body, sticky texture, average carbonation, sweet with underlying sourness aftertaste, sticky, sourness comes back in the finish. Complex, refreshing, very pleasant, very good.

Bottle from Premiere Gourmet in Buffalo, thanks to a cross-boarder shopping trip, pre-apocalypse of course. Firstly, I love me my regular Duchesse. This pours a similarly brown brew, but now with a pink tinge. Mildly sour wine barrel nose, now with a hint of cherry. Taste, wine barrel oak, and grape, mild sour, with a sweet cherry candy pop, that is fairly well balanced. An amazing variation of this beer.

9-4-7-4-15 Bottle, almost four years before bbd. Pours clear, deep dark red, with a small creamy head. Aroma is sour cherries and musty fruit peel, as well as red berries, grapes, wine gum, tannins and wooden barrels. Medium body, with fizzy carbonation. Flavour is tart fruity notes of cherries, red berries, musty fruit peel and sour candy, as well as minerals and wooden notes.

Great Cherry version of regular Duchesse. The Aromas are cherries, sour malt, with a hint of Oak and some floral. Flavors are like nose, a burst of sugary sweet up front and then nice balancing tartness with a little Oak. I can see cooking some duck with this.

Bottle. Clear, dark reddish, amber body with a small pale pink head. Aroma of sour cherry and almonds. Taste is quite sweet with quite much acidity as well, cherry and mild wood. Nice body with aftertaste of cherry that feels more sweet than sour. Very drinkable, but not totally convinced with this, it seems for me like some of the wonderful complexity from the original beer seems to get lost in the cherry flavor.

Bottle. Mahogany-red beer with a pink head. Cherry and light sour aroma. Sour and acetic flavor with cherry. Medium bodied. Sour and acetic notes linger with cherry and oak.

That's really great. Funky. Sour cherry. Basically as good as the original. Was really glad it wasn't sweet cherry.
