Veel fruitigheid en een mooie bitterheid
IPA, 6,5%

Tap at Arendsnest, 2nd December 15. It pours on the darker side for an IPA. Aroma is caramel, sweet some more muted hops. Taste is caramel malt, sweet, not unpleasant, but on the sweeter maltier IPA side, than a hop forward bitter drink. It’s drinkable, but not made in try way I prefer this style

(bottle, 33cl, as Northsea IPA, 6.5% abv) Cloudy, orange-golden colour with a blond medium-sized foamy head. Fruity and slightly floral hoppy aroma with notes of citrus, grapefruit, backed by mildly bready malt. Mildly bitter and slightly sweet flavour, medium to light bodied with a moderate carbonation. Slightly bready malt character with citric hops, including notes of grapefruit and shy tropical accents; moderately dry and mildly hop bitter finish with a touch of tartness. 30.XI.15

Bottle from an Albert Heijn supermarket. Apparently the end result of a series of Mooie Nel beers, with irregular, lacing, off-white, thickly moussy head opening in the middle but retaining well on the edges and leaving small ’islands’ of foam in the middle; colour is a lightly hazy peach to orange blonde with calm sparkling. Typical American-style IPA aroma with suggestions of fresh orange peel (Citra?), pink grapefruit (Cascade?), toasted onion (Simcoe!), pine resin, persimmon, chicken ’bouillon’, sundried tomato, paprika powder, cake, roasted peanuts, white pepper, lavender soap. Restrainedly fruity onset, some redcurrant, unripe stonefruit and mango with a salty touch, medium carbo, supple mouthfeel, caramelly and lightly toasted maltiness, only to end in aromatic hoppiness, bittering but really not deeply so, only softly and letting pass through a lot of juicy malt sweetness; a bittersweet sensation remains as a result, with a spicy, ’dry’ citrusy, peppery and lightly piney hop character. Not bad at all, fragrant as any American style IPA should be. I do not know what has gotten into the Netherlands in recent years - as a Belgian, I can only observe with fascination - but I wish the new Belgian micro breweries would experiment more with these American hops.

Keg at Arendsnest Amsterdam, Netherlands, Tuesday 6th October 2015. Amber in colour it’s fruity, refreshing and quite sessionable for a 6.5% beer, tastes like it has a ginger edge to it, fruity and very good IPA. A7 A4 T8 P4 Ov14 3.7
