Irish Heather Sour Ale. This unusual sour ale is brewed with Irish heather tips instead of hops. Fruity yet tart, Beann Gulban has soft citrus notes, red berries and sweet toffee malts contrasting with a mouth puckering sour character.

Bottle bought in Glasgow. Deep amber in colour, with a slight, off-white, head. Aroma of tart beery fruits and green herbs, with a lambic-like edge. Flavour had more fruit upfront, austere malts and a lingering, mouth puckeringly dry finish. I really enjoyed this beer - it was assertively sour with plenty of character.

Bottle from Beer Hawk. It’s so unusual that I found it hard to rate. To me it’s like a Belgian sour (I dunno... like Duchesse) was mixed with a smoked beer like a Aecht and then mixed again with a standard Britihsh ale. The result isn’t totally unhinged and is passable to drink. Apples, pears, smoked malts and of course bitter. Hides the abv incredibly well.

Bottle at Murphys Law. Clear reddish brown with no real head. Lots of lactic notes, sour berries, light caramel, dried herbs. Not really heather, it’s more fruity and strongly lactic. Light sweet and almost medium sour. Under medium bodied with barely any carbonation.
