Hertog Jan Dubbel is a traditional top-fermenting dark beer. The designation 'dubbel' refers to the double amount of ingredients used. Hertog Jan Dubbel is tasted by all senses, allowing for an optimal enjoyment of color, smell and taste. Firstly you poor it into a glass and marvel at the foam and the pretty reddish brown color. Then you smell the full, soft aroma. You take a sip and taste the rich, malty character. And finally, you enjoy the somewhat sweet aftertaste. This traditional beer has an alcohol percentage of 7.3%. The secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a fresher and richer taste and aroma.

Richly decorated bottle. Murky brown colour. Minimal head. Aroma: prune, raisin, higher spirits, caranel, toffee, spice. Light to medium body. The taste starts as the aroma has predicted. Lots of dried fruit, esters, warming alcohol. And then ... The ending has not arrived. At all. I would have bought a simple glass bottle with proper content.

Crock. Dark brown with a beige head. Aroma of dark fruits, brown sugar, earth, nuts, chocolate. 7+ Palate is weaker than suggested by the aroma, with the taste being dough, chicory, some nuts. It’s quite sweet but dries out a little at the end with discreet bitterness. Grew on me a bit after at first seeming like a let down after the aroma. Has some depth.

Bottled 500ml. -from Metro Zagreb. Dark amber coloured, small off-white head, caramel and dried fruits in the nose. Sweet malty, caramel, heavy dried fruits, touch of raisins and light spices with a way too sweet finish. Now and never again.

Biggish beige head. Clear deep red body. Dried fruit and toffee aroma with herbal spicy notes. Sweetish toffee and red berry taste with brown sugar and spice notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Dryish toffee and candy with dried red berries aftertaste with herbal spicy notes. Lovely! Delicate, balanced, and full of flavour. (0.5l bottle, from Fish & Beer, Copenhagen.)
