Hertog Jan Dubbel is a traditional top-fermenting dark beer. The designation 'dubbel' refers to the double amount of ingredients used. Hertog Jan Dubbel is tasted by all senses, allowing for an optimal enjoyment of color, smell and taste. Firstly you poor it into a glass and marvel at the foam and the pretty reddish brown color. Then you smell the full, soft aroma. You take a sip and taste the rich, malty character. And finally, you enjoy the somewhat sweet aftertaste. This traditional beer has an alcohol percentage of 7.3%. The secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a fresher and richer taste and aroma.

Bottle at THT January. Dark brown with offwhite head. Rye bread, sweet, apple syrup, bubblegum. Quite sweet and moderate bitter. Medium body and soft carbonation. Bottle shared at THT January ‘19. Clear bodied with a tan head. Aroma of malt, toffee, caramel and overripe dark fruits. Flavour is moderate sweet and light to moderate bitter. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Bottle at first THT 2019. Clear light reddish brown with beige head. Cardboard, sweet brown sugar, dried plums and raisins, soft grass, apple. Bit over medium sweet and medium bitter. Medium bodied.

Flesje thuis gedronken. Donkerbruin bier met mooie schuimkraag. Aroma van karamel en gebrande mout. Het zoete en moutige komt ook in de smaak naar boven. Jammer dat het weinig body heeft. Op 16-04-2019 een fles met THT okt-'07 gedronken. Deze fles heeft door zijn leeftijd een zachte houtige smaak en afdronk gekregen. De smaak ebt helaas snel weg.

F: big, tan, good retention. C: dark brown, hazy. A: dark malts, chocolate, dark fruits, caramel, bit toffee, dark bread crust. T: dark malts, caramel, chocolate, bit dark bread, fruity, medium body and carbonation, nothing special yet not bad, enjoyed, 50cl bottle from Auchan Market in Luxembourg.

Corked & caged stoneware jar 50cl. @home poured into a chalice. Clear deep ruby brown colour, small frothy beige head, mostly diminishing. Aroma roasted malts, caramel, dark fruits, candy sugar, licorice, molasses, spicy notes. Taste light heavy sweet and slightly bitter, malty, fruity, caramel, spicy notes, some alcohol. Lngering sweetbitter aftertaste, bit vinous, sugary. Full-bodied, oily to sticky texture, average carbonation, alcohol well-hidden, not too sweet for the style, good dubbel.
