Hertog Jan Dubbel is a traditional top-fermenting dark beer. The designation 'dubbel' refers to the double amount of ingredients used. Hertog Jan Dubbel is tasted by all senses, allowing for an optimal enjoyment of color, smell and taste. Firstly you poor it into a glass and marvel at the foam and the pretty reddish brown color. Then you smell the full, soft aroma. You take a sip and taste the rich, malty character. And finally, you enjoy the somewhat sweet aftertaste. This traditional beer has an alcohol percentage of 7.3%. The secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a fresher and richer taste and aroma.

Bottle picked up from Morrisons Aylesbury. Enjoyed this last night 05-04-06. Dark ruby coloured beer, quite sweet but some dried fruit flavours, this isnβt bad but I had expected better.

Draught. Very dark chestnut colour. Very small head. Disappointing flavour. Disappointingly thin mouthfeel. Tastes like it is brewed on sugar. Roasted flavour and some sourness/acidity. Low bitterness.

Bottle. Flat jet black beer with a winter fruit, and milky coffee aroma. The flavour is vinous, slightly fruity and quite weak and watery. Overall a reasonable beer.

50cl stone crock from Morrisons. Dark ruby coloured beer with thick lasting tight beige head. Dark roasted malts, dark skinned fruits with chocolate, damsons and black cherry. Superb beer, lovely dark flavours. Slightly vinuous in mouth. Finish has some dryness. Bit one dimensional, but what a dimension.

(Bottle 33 cl) This beer pretty much exploded out of the bottle when I removed the cap - oh my, what a shooter. So beware...
Very dark brown with a tall, creamy head. Malty and sweetish with a potent, full body. Huge sediment. 170302

Draught
Dark ruby, good brown head. A bit lemony, brown sugar in the aroma. Sweetish, sugary, liquerish palate. Not very strong and hides ABV completely. I heard that this is only available on tap at the brewery and at βt Arendsnest in Amsterdam.

A deep red almost brown beer with a good head. Very light aroma of fruit. The flavor is lovely sweet with notes from fruits and apples. The aftertaste is very sweet and with only a hint of bitterness. It has a nice palate.

Opaque garnet under light, but like a well-filled chamber pot when under shadow (mmmm...delicious imagery); aroma of pears, sorbitol candy; raspberries. Has a slightly acidic body, semi-sweet chocolate, fluffy maltiness, very candyish in the finish.

A decent Double, but not very good in my opinion. The Tripel is much, much better, but Hertog Jan still makes fantastic beers, so dont be disappointed about my rating :-)
