Hertog Jan Dubbel is a traditional top-fermenting dark beer. The designation 'dubbel' refers to the double amount of ingredients used. Hertog Jan Dubbel is tasted by all senses, allowing for an optimal enjoyment of color, smell and taste. Firstly you poor it into a glass and marvel at the foam and the pretty reddish brown color. Then you smell the full, soft aroma. You take a sip and taste the rich, malty character. And finally, you enjoy the somewhat sweet aftertaste. This traditional beer has an alcohol percentage of 7.3%. The secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a fresher and richer taste and aroma.

Bottle ceramic with cork 50cl: Poured a dark black brown with a light brown cream head, not over flowing but last a bit. The aroma is sweet malt with a fruit hint of some kind. Taste is a dark rich sweet malt, there is that roasted nut blend, the finish is a delightful dry fruit.

First ratingInitial Rating Date: 11/24/200630 cl bottle from a friend in Holland.Labeled 7.3%.Clear dark ruby red color, huge tan head. Chocolate smooth scent with a touch of burnt malt. Lots of chocolate and some raisin taste, some acid as well. Full mouthfeel. Sweet aftertaste. Low bitterness. Turns shady once the yeast sediment is poured in. You don’t feel the 7.3% in it at all. It was best before this summer, so the raisin and slight Madeira might come from ageing.7/4/7/4/16=3.8RerateBottle - ceramic, at WBC Denver, April 11 2014.Clear dark brown color, big teal head. Sweet, malty, light phenolic scent. Sweet, light metallic, phenolic (a bit) taste. Sweet, apple aftertaste. Medium mouthfeel, low bitterness.7/5/8/3/16=3.9

Small yellow-brown head, fast gone over nearly black beer. Old books, vanilla, bit of licorice and mint, and generally a bit sweetish. Thinnish flavour with foremost licorice and/or drop taste, like childrens’ japthee (made from licoricesweets). A tad roasty, but whereas the nose had something reminiscent of mint, here I’d say chewing gum - sorbitol sweetened as Oakes shrewdly remarked. Bit cola-like finish. Thin, thin, thin and artificially sweetened and upped. It’s called Dubbel, I know. But a dubbel from this abbey is a VERY Dutch dubbel, indeed. Zuinigjes an!
