Letter of Marque is a full-bodied and warming barley wine. An English classic aged on extremely exclusive Rivesaltes wine barrels (French port) for 6 months. They are produced in almost the same way as port wine, where alcohol is added to stop fermentation. They then sunbathe in open air for two years in glass balloons two years before being matured in oak barrels for decades (up to 80 years !!!).

Bottle, #3822/4600. It pours a murky brown body under a minimalistic beige head. Sort of oily. The aroma is big and complex, sweetish, ripe fruit, blue plum, red grape, some blackberry, with wood, brown sugar, some chocolate, a good dash of dried figs, prunes and some raisin, as well as alcohol, some tobacco and a faint hint of charcoal. It's full-bodied, warming, oily and silky smooth on the palate, very nicely carbonated, with little bitterness percieved except for in the very end. It's sweet, but not really cloying, and the flavor profile is as bold as the aroma. Toffee, brown sugar, alcohol, wood, dried fruits and some ripe fruit notes. Prunes, dried figs, raisin, or perhaps rather rum raisin, blackberries, juniper berries, tannins, some notes of red wine and a vague note of charcoal too. Everlasting finish leaving me wanting more, and even though it's at 12% ABV and in general a very heavy beer, it slides down easily. Had to work hard with myself to not finish this gem too quickly. 210426

9-4-9-5-18 Bottle, #46201, bottle 0815/4600, four months after bottling. Pours black, with a big creamy mocha head. Aroma is dark fruity malts with muscovado, dark chocolate, rum raisins and tobacco, as well as tannins and red wine barrels. Creamy body, with soft carbonation. Flavour is dark malts with leather, liquorice, tannins and red wine barrels, as well as dark fruits, chocolate, raisins and dark fruits. Rounded, integrated and balanced, and really very enjoyable and drinkable.

Bottle. Color: Very dark ruby to copper, beige head. Aroma: Vinuous, Port-like, malty, dark dried fruit. Taste: Port, red wine, caramel and dark malt, bit boozy, fruity dark fruit notes, toffee. Over moderate to medium sweet, light to moderate bitterness. Hints of wood. Over medium body, below average carbonation. Not too sweet. Nice complexity. Last beers I've had from this brewery (Jetsam and Flotsam) were too sweet for me and a little bit disappointing but this is a nice one again. Good barrel ageing. I like the way Rivesaltes makes this tasting in between (sweetish) wine and Port BA.
