So I’m slogging through a very, very bad run of beers, and Flensburger Dunkel does nothing to alleviate the situation. Decent in appearance, the problems arrive on the nose, which has a dominating buttered toffee smell, one that would seem heavy on an Old Ale. On a dunkel, the odor reeks. The flavor continues this heavy, cloying trait, sweet yet somewhat rank in its oppressiveness. Oh well. I guess these results are deserved when you buy a bottle just because it has a swing-top.

Medium beige head. Deep brown body. Grainy strawy sugary aroma with earthy caramel notes. Dry-sweet grainy strawy caramel taste with buttery notes. Mid-bodied. Mild mouthfeel. Dryish strawy earthy aftertaste with buttery notes. Nice, but could use more character. (0.33l bottle, in some random Copenhagen bar.)

Bottled. Ambery brown colour, mediumsized off-white head. Aroma is bready and caramel malts with some slight wooden and mild toasted notes. Also some slight bitterness. Flavour is quite similar with also some dark dry fruits and mild notes of herbs.

bottle from Edeka Getränkemarkt Allensbach. Clear amber-brown colour, large off-white head. Malty nose with dry roasted malts. Roasty-malty start with a dry herbal hop character in the lingering finish. Caramel flavours dominate and go well together with the dryness.

bottle shared with Tomaz. pours copper, light tan head. aroma, reminded me of old coffee pot that has had coffee sit in there for a while, in other words, weak. flavors, roasted malts, caramel, some hints of brown sugar. Grainy and bitter fruits, caramel with a mild toasted / coffee finish. Not a bad beer, but something keeps this one from developing a more pronounced forward palate.

Sampled as 50 cL swing-top bottle labeled as ’Sau-Walking’. Nice crisp copper coloured body with a nice dense tan head and a bunch of small bubbles rising from the bottom - a bit light for a dunkles, but pretty damn nice looking. Aroma of caramel, sweet cereal, malt and a ton of nuts. Medium-bodied; Strong malty flavour with a bunch of caramel, toffee and a bit of nuts tucked in. Aftertaste shows mostly sweetness, a little maltiness and a touch of spices too. Overall, a decent beer, but not too amazing. Definitely worth trying over in Germany, but it seems easy to find in the U.S. anyways. I sampled this 50 cL swing top bottle purchased at Karstadt in Frankfurt am Main, Germany on 21-February-2009, sampled a few hours later in Germany.
