A superb strong Bitter with a complex palate consisting of a delightful hop character balanced by prominent maltiness.

Cask @ Manchester & County, Manchester. Copper-amber with a thin head. Has lots of sweet malts, so much so it’s fairly sticky in the palate and a touch tangy. Not that exciting.

Cask at The Moon Under Water Watford. Hazed copper coloured pour with a fleeting greyish loose head. Aroma is salty disk water, stale malts and sour apples. Infected me thinks. Flavour is acetone, touch of vinegar, tart granny smith apple, some stale toffee malts. Palate has moderately high tingling carbonation. Very disappointed.

Famed English bitter from a well-respected family brewery, with thinnish, off-white head and pure, warm amber colour; aroma softly and sweetishly malty, caramel, grapefruit, a bit woody; taste malty, nutty with gentle spicy notes, slowly getting dryer and ending in a long, leafy and herbal hop bitterness typical of Kent Goldings.

Dark amber/copper beer with a light caramel aroma. Flavour is initially quite sweet but the caramel is underpinned by a toasted malt flavour. It’s quite sharp but in the mouth it mellows out a touch though that toasty, near-burnt edge remains. Decent but nothing special.

Appearance- caramel, amber, small off white head which quickly fades completely. Aroma- malt, yeast, bread. Taste- solid bitter backbone, smooth, not much carbonation, coats the mouth well, fruity hints, vague bit of caramel, quite well balanced, a short finish but has some juicy hop resins. A pretty good ale.

Cask at the White Swan, Solihull. Poured a crystal clear medium amber with a frothy white head and lots of broken lace. The aroma is stale malt and weak hop. The flavour is medium bitter with a watery hop bitter palate. Medium to full bodied with flat carbonation. A nice smooth creamy session bitter.

Out of date bottle. (I’m doing a cellar mop up job). I used to like this beer a lot, 20 odd years ago. Either it’s changed, or this bottle is showing signs of it being past its best. But probably, it’s just me. I’ve got more poncey, maybe. Shame. Ponces get on my nerves.
