Heavy Cross – Tripel IPA, 10% – 33cl
Smaak
Naam
Heavy Cross is een zwaar (heavy) gehopte IPA. De naam verwijst naar de hit ‘Heavy Cross’ van Gossip. “It’s a cruel, cruel world to face on your own. A heavy cross to carry along.” Dus drink dit bier in goed gezelschap. Bovendien verwijst Heavy Cross naar de bijbel: ‘Jesus carries the heavy cross‘ en daarmee naar de thuisbasis van Jopenbier: de Jopenkerk Haarlem.

11th June 2018; Shrewsbury monthly meeting of a beer share group in Chez Sophie. Cheers Simon for the 330ml bottle (BB 3rd May 2019). it poured a misty golden colour with a white topping. Tropical fruits throughout, yeasty and boozy. Nice balance between the citrus semi-sourness and the malts sweetness all alongside that yeast presence.

330ml bottle @ monthly tasting, Chez Sophie, June 18, courtesy of Simon. Pours a misty gold, frothy white head. Aroma has vibrant citra, nelson sauvin, grapefruit, lime, lemon. Taste presents a strong malt backbone, with a robust hoppy character, a touch sticky and resinous but plenty of sweet hop flavours coming through. Good stuff.

Fat Taphouse . Doftar blommigt ja parfym. I munnen mycket mycket maltig och tung frukt . Övermogna frukter . Typisk maltsjuk öl. Påminner om en strong ale eller Barely wine . Satans söt. Socker ipa

Bottle at home. Almost clear golden with off white head., Lots of dank hops, some blueberries, light cheese, grapefruit, there's some white grapes indeed, but mor ein a thick sweet white wine way. Caramel, sugary malts, soft rye, oats. Lime peel too. It has lots of nice fresh fruity notes up front, followed by dank Citra, thick sugary malts, then alcohol and a herbal/hay bittter finish. Quite sweet and bitter. Full bodied. It's a little over the top in the alcohol, but it is actually quite nice for the style, no overdone malts or anything.

(Draught at In De Wildeman, Amsterdam, 21 Feb 2018) Golden amber colour with dense, off-white head. Fruity, hoppy nose with resin, tea, grapefruit and pine needles. Malty, fruity, vinous taste with notes of caramelized pineapple, apricot marmalade, resin, dried fruit, honey, sweet malt and a generous piney bitterness. Full body, quite sweet. A bit sweet and fairly vinous, but tasty with a generous hop presence. Nice one.

Bottle at home many thanks to a euroswap with Dutch Drebus, 02/03/18. Murky orange amber with a decent egg shell white head. Nose is bitter orange, grapefruit, caramel malts, light booze dance, pine resin, sweet malts, stoned fruits. Taste comprises sticky tropical fruits, mango pulp, resinous pine, bitter citric flesh, alcohol well evident, grapefruit. Full bodied, fine carbonation, semi aggressive hop bitterness and a rising boost in the close. Big and ballsy old skool kind of a DIPA ... fun stuff!

0,33l bottle at home. BB 03. May 2019. amber hazy color, small white head. smells pines, ripe fruits, citric, oranges, lemon grass, dough, light candy. nice smell, but rather heavy. full body, soft carbonation, slick mouthfeel. tastes ripe fruits, pines, some citrus, oranges, lemon grass, doughy, candy, lightly peppery, bit grassy / herbal, light apple / pear notes. finishes medium bitter with notes of grass, ripe fruits and candy / caramel. okish, rather heavy, I usually dont like high ABV IPAs and unfortunatly this is no exception, lacks the drinkability of a lower ABV IPA while still also not being as drinkable as a barley wine (because of less carbonation / less hops). overall still above average but also not a favorite of mine.
