One of the brewery's flagship beers, launched in 1986 in the typical lacquered white bottles and named after the dragon statue on top of the Ghent belfry tower.

Bij een dergelijk imposant symbool dat al meer dan 6 eeuwen standhoudt, hoort een al minstens even indrukwekkend bier. Zoals de draak aan de top van de stad prijkt, behoort Gulden Draak al jaren tot de wereldtop van de bieren. Het is een donkere tripel, wat het op zich al een uitzonderlijk bier maakt, maar de complexe smaak met toetsen van caramel, gebrande mout en koffie maakt het uniek. Kortom, het bier is zijn naam waardig.
Voor de nagisting wordt gebruik gemaakt van een wijngist die bepalend is voor de weergaloze smaak en die zorgt voor de langdurige smaakevolutie (= levend bier). Hoe ouder het bier wordt, hoe meer aroma het krijgt en hoe voller de smaak en de kleur worden. Het is dus zeker de moeite waard om enkele grote flessen bij te houden en te laten rijpen gedurende vele jaren.
Kleur: robijnrood, donker
Alcoholvolume: 10,5% - 23° Plato
Aroma: zoet, licht gebrande mout en koffie
Smaak: zeer vol mondgevoel met toetsen van chocolade, karamel
Afdronk: bitterzoet en lang
Ideale schenktemperatuur: tussen 8° en 12° Celsius
Gulden Draak laat zich makkelijk drinken als aperitief, dessert of gewoon als u even tijd maakt om te genieten. Deze “gerstewijn” harmonieert uitstekend bij en in stoofpotjes en bij een Gentse stoverij in het bijzonder. Het geeft ook een meerwaarde aan sauzen bij rood vlees zoals een bordelaise en is ook uitermate geschikt als dessertbier, vooral bij donkere chocolade.

Bottle. Light brown/ruby with a nice beige head. Mild aroma of red fruit, raisins, yeast, vanilla, some reluctant hops and a hint of booze. Tasste is fruity (red berries, cherries), caramel, raisins and some sugar. Slightly sweet and sour. Low to medium carbonation. Creamy mouthfeel. Alcohol is extremely well hidden. A rather delicate and restrained brew, not as heavy and complex as some other quads/strong ales/barley wines but very nice and extremely well balanced. Almost easy drinking (in a good way).

330ml bottle into tulip. Nose of raisins, plum, brandy, malt and Belgium. Red/brown beer with towering creamy head and a million tiny bubbles. Good body, smooth texture. More dark fruit and brandy is followed by caramel and, late on, orange zest. Superb.

Voici un bière tout en équilibre et en tension. Un titrage de 10,5 % et un sucre bien présent (sans surcharger cependant la bière) : voici les 2 jambes de cette Gulden Draak et dont les 2 bras sont l’amertume et arômes fruités qui viennent balancer cette bière. Son coeur me direz vous? La chaleur conférée par l’ensemble des plus homogène. Sa robe brune et d’une parfaite limpidité est très agréable. Son effervescence soutenue par de fines bulles donne quant à elle naissance à une mousse blanc cassé de 2,5 cm d’épaisseur. Le nez donne le "la", entre alcool et fruits dont le pruneau, la fraise et la mûre. L’attaque se porte elle même sur les fruits noirs parfaitement complétés par la fraîcheur de l’amertume et la chaleur de l’alcool. Ce sont les arômes pleins sur une belle tension qui sont les plus notables. En deuxième bouche, nous avons alors une déclinaison de cette base où l’alcool se fait plus présent mais toujours sans être agressif. L’arrière quant à elle se tourne davantage sur l’amertume et confère une fraîcheur de bon aloi. Le final continue à voir l’alcool monter en puissance toujours sur la même base avec un houblon qui fléchit légèrement cependant mais avec une bière qui conserve sa rondeur et 10,5% de titrage alcoolique qui ne se ressent pas. C’est bon, c’est puissant, c’est plein : un beau savoir-faire qu’il faudrait savoir laisser vieillir en cave.

Barwa ciemnobursztynowa, klarowne, piana w kolorze złamanej bieli, niewielka, niezbyt trwała. W aromacie może nie jakoś wybitnie intensywnie, ale jest dużo nut brzoskwiń, gruszek, moreli, sfermentowanych owoców, fenoli, nut słodkich i trochę rumowych. W smaku półsłodkie, wyraźne nuty owocowe, suszone i sfermentowane owoce, gruszka, brzoskwinia, morela, do tego karmel, lekkie toffi, cukier kandyzowany, rodzynki, nuty chlebowe. Po ogrzaniu wyłazi szlachetny alkohol w stylu rumowym, zaznacza się długi, drewniano-waniliowy posmak z lekka, uzupełniony o przyprawy oraz nieznacznie nuty winno-octowe. Goryczka niska, lekko pestkowo-figowa, wysycenie niskie do średniego, mogłoby być nieco wyższe. Alkohol wyczuwalny na średnim poziomie ale całkowicie przyjemny. Bardzo dobry Belg, brakuje właśnie nieco tego wysycenia i goryczki no i może większej przyprawowości, która szybko znika. Niemniej jednak piwo warte spróbowania.

Clear, bronze-copper with a beige head atop that is initially large but shows low retention.
Sweet and malty in the nose with brown sugar, raisins, brown bread and tons of caramel. Strong pepper phenols, doughy yeast, and almost a citrus peel-like acidity mixing with strong alcohol vapors.
Rich and malty, with a somewhat tired texture of soft, almost mushy caramel-raisin. Warming alcohol cuts through the body and it’s not quite cloying, though I just find so little of interest here aside from copious caramel malt character, obvious candi sugar, booze and peppery, clove-accented phenol. It is clean, though, which is kind of a huge victory in this brewery’s case.

Ein klassisches, schweres belgisches Strong Ale. Es hat die bekannten Rumtopf-Aromen und dazu einen schönen Malzkern. Der Alkohol ist zwar deutlich spürbar, aber gut eingebunden und erzeugt ein tolles Geschmackserlebnis.

Creamy beige head left a frothy cover on a murky brown body. Malty, boozy & dark fruits aroma. Medium to full body. Smooth on the palate with minimal carbonation. Sticky but dry on the aft. Sweetish to the fore with plum, hints of whisky, raisin, brown sugar, licorice & a slight tangy grape taste on the back. Long aftertaste.
