0.33 l bottle from 'Sterk Avondverkoop', cellared for over two years. Clear, very dark ruby with a thin, frothy, almost stable, beige head. Sweetish-malty, slightly fruity aroma of molasses, raisins and bourbon. Quite sweet, malty, slightly fruity taste of molasses, raisins, prunes, bourbon, vanilla and a touch of chocolate, followed by a medium long, slightly bitter, gently boozy finish. Medium to full body, gently effervescent and a bit fizzy mouthfeel, average carbonation. Great Barley Wine, not too sweet and fairly sophisticated, has intense bourbon flavours while maintaining a perfect balance. Just a bit too fizzy and boozy, other than that very good.
