Some say that in older times all beers were smoked, as grains used to be dried above fire, when producing malt. Due to this, malt absorbed the smoke which was later transferred to the beer. From German the word “Rauch” means smoke, thus the name of the style “Rauchbier” - smoked beer. Today, we use malt that is being smoked by using the same method, by German maltsters, in order to give our Rauchbier an amazing touch of smokiness. Its an easy to drink lager with a nice hint of smokiness and light caramel.

Süß-rauchiger, angenehm malziger Beginn. Leichte Bitterkeit, eher trocken, intensiv rauchig, erhöhte Karbonisierung. Spritzig, mittellanger Abgang, gut. 10/11/10/11//11

Bottle at home, orange beer, small head. Aroma is smoke, malt, smoked ham, light fruit. Taste is the same, smokey, malt, sweet, bittersweet, not bad.

On tap at Taproom 27, pours a hazy golden with a medium beige head. Aroma brings out lots of fiery smoke upfront, not much else. Flavour is along the same lines, with smoke, bready malt and toasted notes. Nice smokiness to this, with a nice fire pit character. Solid.

SEP-2019. GROWLER. Hazy golden-amber, off-white head. Rich smoky aroma, smoked sausages, some background caramel. Moderate somewhat simplistic amber malț sweetness, the meaty fatty sauges again, smooth round body, a kiss of spicy hops. Round yet crisp and easy enough drinking mouthfeel. Really full and hearty. 3,7/5.
JAN-2018. DRAFT. Clear amber, off-white head. Malty and smoky nose - the malt is caramel and a tad too sugary, the smoke is spicy oaky. The taste is a clean amber lager malt base with a layer of smoke and hop bitterness. Not thin but too clean and crisp - does not have the "fatty" mouthfeel of a real Bamberg beer. 3,3/5.
FEB-2017. PET growler from the brewery. Hazy red, beige head. Subtle sweet bready malts, mild smokiness, perhaps some hop spice. Clean rounded bready sweetness, moderate smokiness, that feels right (if a bit harsh/burnt/puhoiesque), spicy smoky and hoppy finish. Pretty good, free of major flaws. 3,4/5.
