In the past, due to lack of hygiene, drinking water was usually polluted with illness-causing bacterias. Beer did not contain such pathogens, as it was boiled and hopped. Therefore, until the end of the 19th century, beer was the preferred daily beverage. To keep a clear head, Bamberg's brewers had a special brewing technique to make low-alcohol beer. Hoppy, mildly smoky and with less than 1,2% alcohol the unfiltered Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Hansla brings back this old Bamberg brewing tradition.

Bottle. Cloudy amber to brown, big foamy golden-white head. Dry mineral honey roast and burnt smoke aroma. Medium light dry body, burnt/carbonized base, fairly bitter initially, mellows out after a little, then chewy and pleasant enough. The smoke never gets as round as with their other beers of course. Still, good in a pinch.

A dark brown beer, a head is big and light beige. Aroma has dry smokyness, some ham, tar, light maltyness. Taste has dry smokyness, wood, some harshness, slightly musty end. Light+ bodied. There are some mistakes, but as low alc.%, this is very nice.

Bottled at Zum Franziskaner, Stockholm. Clear mahogany colour, rocky head. Relatively mild charcuterie smoke. Dry with light body and crisp, rounded mouthfeel. Beechwood smoke dominates. While it lacks the seemless, meaty softness of its bigger cousins, it packs the full flavour. Mid bitter finish. Exceptionally well made.

0.5 l bottle from 'Bierothek' (Dortmund), best before October 2020. Clear, dark amber with a large, foamy, stable, off-white head. Sweetish-malty, quite smoky aroma of smoked ham, caramel and nuts. Minimally sweet, fairly dry, gently smoky and rather watery taste of smoked ham and light grains, followed by a short, slightly bitter, gently smoky finish. Thin body, quite effervescent mouthfeel, average to lively carbonation. Typical Schlenkerla smoke aroma, just very watery and effervescent. Interesting beer but wouldn't want to drink it more than once.

500 ml bottle from Bierothek Wien, bb 10/2020. Copper-brown, clear body, with a big, frothy, rocky, lacing, beige head. Aroma of fresh bacon, smokey wood, bread, some toffee, slight dark fruit. Tastes quite simple, light bodied, pretty smokey, bitter, wooden, with moderate bread and toffee. Light, slick mouthfeel, with an average carbonation. Finishes bitter, dry, smokey, wooden, slightly bready. Nice one. The nose is great, a typical, rich Schlenkerla. The taste feels unbalanced though, with the smoke too dominant and too less body. Still really interesting and quaffable stuff for the very low ABV. Score: 8 / 4 / 6 / 3 / 13
