In the past, due to lack of hygiene, drinking water was usually polluted with illness-causing bacterias. Beer did not contain such pathogens, as it was boiled and hopped. Therefore, until the end of the 19th century, beer was the preferred daily beverage. To keep a clear head, Bamberg's brewers had a special brewing technique to make low-alcohol beer. Hoppy, mildly smoky and with less than 1,2% alcohol the unfiltered Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Hansla brings back this old Bamberg brewing tradition.

Bottle. Well, why not. Kind of missing a point without the voltage, but smoke touch is lovely. Okay

bottle from Schlenkerla's online shop. Hazy deep golden brown colour, tall white head, nice smoky nose. Light-bodied, malty, slightly yeasty with a nice touch of smoke. Easydrinking light smoked beer.

Trocken rauchiger, mild bitterer Beginn. Leicht erhöhte Karbonisierung, leicht herb. Etwas getreidig, die Bitterkeit nimmt zu, gleichzeitig ziemlich trocken. Mittellanger Abgang. Nett! 9/10/9/9/10/9

Huge thanks to quack-duck for that one! Bottle looks simple but really good. Beer in the glass dark brown, huge head. Dry malty, smokey aroma. Starts dry, fine roasty malty, light smokey notes. A bit metallical. Finish less smokey, a bit washy. Not as drinkable as other Schlenkerla beers. But still okay.

500ml bottle. Clear, dark copper colour with average to huge, thick, frothy to creamy, moderately to mostly lasting, moderately lacing, off-white head. Typical Schlenkerla smokiness in reduced mode, hints of ham, smoked eel etc., grassy hoppy overtones. Taste is dry, smoky malty, slightly grassy hoppy, diluted hints of ham, smoked eel, smoked wood, a minimally ashy touch, slight grassy chlorophyllic tartness, widely disguised, very cautious doughy yeasty undertones. Watery texture, smooth and soft palate, fine and gentle carbonation. Superbly crafted - and probably long developed and refined until Schlenkerla went to public with this one -, the typical Schlenkerla high quality standard you can rely on; lacks of course intensity and body due to its style.
