In the past, due to lack of hygiene, drinking water was usually polluted with illness-causing bacterias. Beer did not contain such pathogens, as it was boiled and hopped. Therefore, until the end of the 19th century, beer was the preferred daily beverage. To keep a clear head, Bamberg's brewers had a special brewing technique to make low-alcohol beer. Hoppy, mildly smoky and with less than 1,2% alcohol the unfiltered Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Hansla brings back this old Bamberg brewing tradition.

Bottle from Geers. Unclear chestnut brown colour, beige foam. Typical Schlenkerla smokiness, malty, some sweetness, watery. Nice and refreshing low alcohol smoke beer.

Astrein!

20/III/20 - 50cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker), shared @ home, BB: VII/2020 (2020-271)
Pretty clear reddish amber beer, small dense creamy bit irregular off-white head, stable, bit adhesive, no lacing. Aroma: pretty malty, grains, meaty smell, bit smoky, hint of sulphur. MF: ok carbon, medium to light body. Taste: nice bitterness, very thirst quenching, hoppy, little metallic, dry, soft smoky touch. Aftertaste: pretty bitter, metallic touch (as in so many AF beers), soft smoky notes, bit grassy, nice! For an AF beer of course…

Bottle picked up at Westhill SS. It pours hazy amber - brown with a foamy white head. The aroma is sweet and sticky, smoky, toasty, bbqed meaty, smoked ribs, wood and toasted brown bread. The taste is dry and bitter, toasty and smoked malt, earthy, touch of charred wood, burnt toast and a touch of spice with a bitter, smoked finish. Lighter end of body (but not thin) and moderate carbonation. Provides a lot at this low abv. Nice work.

500 ml bottle. Unclear amber, foamy head. Smoked bacon, pale malts, corn, floral hops, light dry citrus/grapefruit. Dry bitterness, light corny sweetness. Light bodied, watery texture, lively carbonated, dry smoky finish. This is a great low alcohol beer. Very balanced, a lot of smoke and thirstquenching!

Bottle at Zum Franziskaner. A bit hazy dark golden with a large head. Aroma of smoked malt, sausage, grain and some wood. The same in the taste. Light and easy to drink with a fairly bitter finish.

Bottle. Hazy golden body with lots of flecks beneath a white head. Steady carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of smoked cheese, ham, copper and lightly roasted malt. Flavour of lightly smoked grain, Cheetos and a papery finish. Thin to medium body with a smooth texture. Soft fizz. A unique, beery low-ABV beer.
