Is the Space Pope reptilian? That question remains to be answered but in the meantime we have his eponymous IPA to consider. Brewed with an astronomical amount of Mosaic, Citra, CTZ and (what else?) Galaxy hops that lend notes of passionfruit and melon to the clean flavors of base malt and a touch of crystal malt for depth of character. When your ecclesiastical jurisdiction encompasses the entire universe, only Cigar City’s Space Pope IPA will do!

Ever so slightly hazy golden and peach coloured body with a thinnish, single centimetre to perhaps two centimetres tall tan head that fades very quickly. Aroma of grass, flowers and a touch of citrus fruits, with a lot of malt and yeast components behind and somehow, even more alcohol and astringency that is quite strong.Medium-bodied; Very strong herbal and grassy flavours at first with some light herbs and a dose of dry, resinous flavours and ending with a good solid malt complexity and a little alcohol warmth coming through, as well. Aftertaste shows a softer, more mellow flavour, one that is still heavily dependent upon the malts, but showing some smoother sugars, a dose of the citrus fruits and ending with some yeastie funk, in a good way. Overall, a nice and relatively complex IPA that is definitely East Coast focused, that doesn't have any high alpha acids, but does have a nice profile throughout. I sampled this twelve ounce can, purchased from Whole Foods in Pentagon City (Arlington), Virginia on 24-July-2019 for US$2,49 sampled in my hotel room here in Langhorne, Pennsylvania on 04-October-2019.

12oz can pours with a slightly hazy gold body that has thin copper hues and supports a nice light tan head of foam. The aroma offers up orange and clementine like citrus hoppiness with a light herbal hop sensation in the background. The taste delivers juicy and mildly sweet orange and clementine hop flavor cut by thin tangy citrus and some grapefruit like hop bitterness. To the finish a distracting murmur of sweet fruity esters bubbles to the surface. The esters are mild enough to not derail the experience.

12oz can pours out golden topped with a white head. Nose is nice crisp citrus mango some melons and a little sweetness. Taste is more of the nice sweet fruit notes melons and a well balanced malt bill.

Few cans at home. Pretty orange yellow pour with a puffy head. Nose is fruits and some herbal tones. Tastes of grapefruit, melon, passion fruit, light herbal, some pepper. chewy mouth feel, low bitterness.

150ml draught at Agenturet Øl og Vinbar. Hazed warm golden body, small sized white head, fair lacing. Promising aromas of tropical fruits, semi sweet. Sappy fruit hoppy flavours, hints of mango, orange and apricot. Citrus peels to a mid-dry ending, long lived. Fine depth. Pleasing. (Tromsø 11.09.2019).
