Our take on a traditional old fashioned Yorkshire Best Bitter, with a strong malt character and enhanced bitterness, brought bang up to date with a last minute hop addition for extra aroma.

Ingredients: Maris Otter Pale Malted Barley, Crystal Malted Barley, Northdown Hops, Fuggles Hops.

Hand pumped at Malto, Riccione, Italy. Pours copper-reddish, clear, with very fine white foam. Aroma is malty and earthy. Body is average, with moderate carbonation. Taste is medium bitter, very traditional English earthy. Final is still moderately bitter, and earthy.

Handpump @Luppolo Station (Rome). Ambrata, viva, schiuma bianco-sporca media. Al naso splendido profilo maltato, con note di tè, terrose, leggermente erbacee. In bocca ha un profilo di malto fantastico con chiusura amara leggera, bilanciata, perfetta. Corpo leggero, carbonazione leggera. Si beve a secchiate, strepitosa!

--Cask at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. -- Almost clear copper colour. Caramelly, leafy nose. Mid sweet with light to medium body and rounded mouthfeel. Caramel and bread, brown sugar and leaves. Mildly resinous mid bitter finish. Not great.

Bottle from the Real Ale Warehouse. Pours clear amber with a short-lived thin white head. Aromas of malt and light biscuit, stewed tea. Taste is more of the same. Thin finish.

Cask at the King and Castle, Windsor. Poured a hazy amber with a frothy white head and some clingy lace with a few bubbles. The aroma is malt, light woody hop. The flavour is moderate to light bitter with a light cardboard malt, dry yeast, woody hop bitter palate. Medium to light bodied with average carbonation. Too light and lacks defining flavours. Nice pump clip tho!

Handpull cask at the Pilgrims Progress, Bedford. Amber, clear, with a smooth off-white head. Light malty aroma with even lighter citrus and a bit of grass. Bittersweet taste, very gentle and heading to a slightly more assertive bitter at the end of the sip. Long bitter finish with orange oil in the finish. Tasty but certainly at the plainer end of the spectrum.

Bottle from that shop in Malton. Appearance - bright amber with a decent head. Nose - oatmeal and light toffee. Taste - more of the same but a bit grainy. Palate - close to medium bodied with a crunchy texture and a fairly good finish. Overall - a solid citizen if a bit grainy.
