Our take on a traditional old fashioned Yorkshire Best Bitter, with a strong malt character and enhanced bitterness, brought bang up to date with a last minute hop addition for extra aroma.

Ingredients: Maris Otter Pale Malted Barley, Crystal Malted Barley, Northdown Hops, Fuggles Hops.

Clear amber beer with a filmy head. Light hop aroma. Flavour is initially quite bland but zesty fruit and sharp, bitter hop soon comes through. It’s not particularly interesting or special but it’s tasty.

Cask (backlog). Hazy amber colour, small bubbly white head. Aroma is fruit, nectar, mild diacetyl and some sweet malts to it. Flavour is bready malts, mild citrus, nectar, wood and some resiny notes. OK apart from the mild diacetyl notes in the aroma.

Bottled 500ml. -from www.beershop.hr Clear amber coloured, small to medium sized off-white head, mild hoppy caramel nose. The taste is basicly the same, herbal hoppy and caramel with toasted malt. Light grainy notes in bitterish finish. Nothing special here.

Nick Stafford’s Stallion. Thanks Ogi! Ah, love the white horse thing, those things are cool (and bring back memories of long read Arthur C. Clarke books). Poured a coppery body with a medium sized off white head. Caramelly aroma mixed with some herbal hoppy notes both aren’t that exciting and reminded me of Panadon - this cough syrup I had to take once or twice when I was a kid. And I never liked it. In any case, the taste goes on to be a mix of a mild, dry caramel background with a mild herbal-citric hop. Light chalky notes (noted before I spotted the horse, heh), clean, dry. Ok really, but as unexciting as they get, in my opinion at least.

Cask at The Mermaid, St Albans on 28 September. Poured a hazy amber with a halo of white head. Musty aroma with some floral hops and hazelnut sweetness. Flavours of cereals, fruitcake and some wet grass. Stale malt on the palate with pine bitterness and a slight metallic edge.
