Pouring with a slight and subtle mahogany hue and a multitude of flavors that will melt on your tongue - this is one nemesis you'll feel good about keeping around.

355 ml bottle poured in to a Snifter. Dark mahogany colour with a thin lightly tanned head. Sweet aroma with caramel malts, fruits, a sharp bitterness, light boozy, dark roasted notes. Taste is light bitter. Full bodied. Lingering roasted bitter finish. Some blue cheese. Odd bag of flavours. A crossover BW and Porter.

Pours a very dark brown colour, almost opaque, and a rocky beige head with a thin layer retention. Aroma's: hops, caramel malts, light fruit, light roast. Retronasal it's firm resinous hops, bitter, caramel sweet, light roast. Flavour is moderate bittersweet. Above medium bodied. Warming alcohol. Long finish with increasing roast, resulting in a firm bitterness.

Bottle, thanks Finn! Dark brown, claret. Light sugary melanoidin roast nose. Medium full sweet body, mellow mouthfeel. Light wood booze, metallic smoke, pastry aftertaste.

Bottle. Dark brown color with beige head. Aroma is roasty, chocolate, not too much flavour there, and too dark for a Barleywine for my taste. Taste is the same, a bit bitter in the back. Not the most impressive of Founders beers.

330ml bottle from Battle of Bull, Cheras, Malaysia. Poured a clear dark brown, almost black colour with a bubbly off white head. The aroma is light toffee caramel. The flavour is moderate sweet, with a rich, liqourice, light toffee, warm alcohol bitter palate and a long alcohol bitter finish.. Verging on alcohol burn. Over medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Barleywine by Founders and one I never heard before, until I ran into it at Dr. Beer in Antwerp; has been in existence for a couple of years now, with each year being a bit different apparently. Medium thick, moussy, dense, greyish-beige, opening head, dark cola-like bronze-brown colour with mahogany hue. Aroma of hazelnut paste, ‘Koetjesreep’, cola, brown rum, sugared tea, wet toast, chestnut liqueur, liquorice hint. Sweetish dried-fruity onset, fig and hazelnut, medium carb, bit oily, full body; hard-caramelly and hazelnutty maltiness, multi-layered, shifting from sweet to softly toasty-bitter, the bitterness accentuated by a rum-like alcohol effect and herbal hoppiness. Boozy finish but not overly so, lingering toffee-like sweetness and nuttiness too. Typical Founders profile, not the most complex barleywine I had, but a very solid one for sure.

Pours dark brown with a two finger tan head. Aroma of chocolate, pine, and roast malt. The flavor is roast malt, chocolate, toffee, coffee and hops resin. It’s intense, well-hopped, and full bodied. I found it somewhat like a black IIPA. Excellent beer.

Draft. A black beer with a tan head. The aroma has notes of prunes, over ripe fruit, caramel, dried cherries, alcohol, and malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of prunes, citrus fruits, wood, alcohol, caramel, and malt, leading to a dry finish.
