India Pale Ales (IPAs) of old were heavily hopped to survive their journey to the colonies. This is Rob’s interpretation - believing the hops may have mellowed by arrival.

Malts: Maris Otter, Best Pale, Wheat
Hops: Chinook, Dana, Summit

Bottle. Golden colour, cloudy, minimal head. Aroma is mostly herbal hops, also some pine and citrus - definitely an English, not American character. Medium bitterness. Medium body, medium carbonation. Good.

Dark yellow color and a white head. Light malt flavor and hops. Aroma is also light. Smooth, delicate flavor. On the sweet side, dry, bitter hops initially, then some fruit and the hops are there in back. Good session ipa.

500ml bottle bought at The Brig Larder, Kirkwall. Pearl white head to a bright amber-gold body. Crocheted lacing down glass. Smell of leafy hops. Taste of grapefruit and juicy malts added by a spicy twist. Resinous bitterness to the ending. Medium bodied. Clean, fresh and nice (Hotel room, Kirkwall 15.04.2016).

Handpull cask at the Cavens Arms, Dumfries. Light to mid-gold, with a light white head and considerable lacing. Astringent aroma with a strong note of citrus. Lip-smacking bitter/savoury aroma. Sea salt, sulphur, TCP, lemon and gardenia all vie for attention in the taste. Bitter and astringent finish. An interesting interpretation of the classic pale ale.

Bright clear gold beer, good off white head. Palate is light and minerally crisp. Light malts bring mild sweetness. Mellow floralness in the mid. Hops are yellow grapefruit made lively by the minerally carbonation. Pithy bitterness leads to a nice juicy orange and a whisper of peach. Finishes light and semi dry. Clean and pretty drinkable.

Bottle from Cork & Cask. Clear golden body with a medium white head. Lively carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of pear, grass, herbs and lemon. Flavour of lemon, parsley and straw. Thin body with an oily texture. Soft fizz. Tastes like a strong Golden Ale. Swannay remind me of Fuller’s in many ways - both brew reliable, well balanced beers.

Bottle at home. It pours clear golden yellow with a small white head. The nose is fresh, lemon, biscuit, toasty and lime. The taste is crisp, toasty, grain, lemon, grapefruit peel and peppery notes with a dry, lightly bitter finish. Medium body and fine, prickly carbonation. Balanced and rather drinkable. Solid. Cask several times more recently. Really sings on cask. Very chuggable.
