We've got friends in remote places, Alaska being one of them. Sassan and Brian from Denali Brewing Co. packed their bags with 30 pounds of Chaga mushrooms from Alaskan birch trees and embarked on the long journey through foreign lands and over the arctic just so that we could brew with it. Chaga has been known as a medicinal plant for ages. Denali is not only a brewery, once again it is also the name of the highest mountain in North America

A colablack beer, a head is medium and beige. Aroma has liquirice, some salt liquirice and coffee, also chocolate. When warmer, a slightly mustyness. Taste has salt liquirice, coffee, hint of riped fruits. Full bodied, low carbonation, pleasant and smooth. The great and balanced beer with nice salt liquirice. Unnaturally, better when cold.

On tap at Foresters Hall, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out spicy peppers, light cocoa and a touch of toasted malt. Flavour is along the same lines, with spiciness upfront, followed by cocoa and light toasted malt. The fungal notes don't really come through other than muting everything. It's alright - novelty stuff more than anything.

Draft. A black beer with a dark brown head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, and herbs. The flavor is sweet with notes of chocolate, roasted malt, alcohol, coffee, and herbs (which is probably the mushrooms), leading to a bitter finish.

Tap at Il Birrificio. Dark opaque black color, small beige head. Smokey, peaty, even a bit sweet aroma. Medium-bodied. Smoke, tar, licorice with good drinkability. A bit medicinal. But ok.
