We've got friends in remote places, Alaska being one of them. Sassan and Brian from Denali Brewing Co. packed their bags with 30 pounds of Chaga mushrooms from Alaskan birch trees and embarked on the long journey through foreign lands and over the arctic just so that we could brew with it. Chaga has been known as a medicinal plant for ages. Denali is not only a brewery, once again it is also the name of the highest mountain in North America

500ml bottle, batch 1512, from Vinmonopolet Langnes. Oily pour revealing a bubbly espresso head leaving spotty lacing behind. Deep black body with a brownish shade. Smell of roasted black malts joined by earth and nuts. Smooth chocolate flavours together with mushrooms, nuts and liquorice. Bittersweet dark fruity finish, lingering and warming.Full bodied. Lovely sipper on a Saturday afternoon (Tromsø 27.02.2016).

Small brown head doesn’t last. Opaque black body. Roasty earthy chocolatey aroma with mineraly notes. Sweetish earthy roasty chocolatey taste with sooty notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, flat mouthfeel. Sweetish earthy nougat aftertaste with mealy meaty notes. Nice, drinkable, kind of low on flavour. (0.5l bottle, from wine monopoly, Storo. Batch #1512.)

Svart med lavt lys brunt skum. Lukter kakaobønner, mørk sjokolade og kaffe. Middels pluss i fylde. Noe bitterhet, mot mørk sjokolade. Middels sødme, rund å fin spesielt i starten. Alkoholfylden kommer sent. Mørke frukter er også inni der er sted. Lett salt lakris. Litt oljete.

Svart farge med beige skum. Skummet forsvinner raskt, men henger i glassveggen. Lukter av sjokolade, mørke stenfrukter og alkohol. Godt med kullsyre. Medium fylde. Smaken kommer mer med i ettersmaken. Kjenner alkoholvarmen. Noe bitter og søt avslutning.

At Billie’s Bierkafetaria in Antwerp, thanks Craftmember for sharing this one. Medium thick, light greyish beige head quickly opening but lacing well, blackish robe with burgundy edges, hazy. Aroma of coffee grounds, toasted peanuts, dried banana, nut shells, cured meat, whisky, toffee. Soft sweetish onset with basic sourishness (raisin, fig, blackberry touch) and a dried porcini-like umami accent, all pairing very well, soft carbo, full and ’fatty’, somewhat viscous mouthfeel without being too heavy, caramelly malt base with deep nutty character evolving in mouth-filling roasted bitterness, coffeeish with further bittering, but gentle herbal hops and some warming, whisky-like alcohol. Very well done.

Draft @ Billie’s Bier Kafetaria. Dark black, beige foam. Soft carbonation. Sweet nose of caramel with roasty coffee flavours. Milky with notes of spices. Sweet and bitter stout. Good.

Thank you! Sampled draft @ Billie’s Beer Kafetaria. Stout with a type of mushroom that is completely new to me. Hugely umami, savory-like beer which is potentially due to the mushroom influence. Compearable in a way to the flavor profile of a succulent welldone portobella in its savory quality with granted a big amount of licorice. Black with little very dark mocha head looks very sludgy. Heavy umami, gravy like nots with licorice, herbal coffee, chicory, some roast. Interesting savory umami stout. Definitely different from what is usual. Interesting & succeful.

Sehr weicher Malzantrunk, mild schokoladig, sehr leicht röstig. 13/11/9/9/11/9
