A regular winner of awards for quality and flavour, and winner of the silver medal at the International Brewing Industry Awards 2002, this refreshing yet full-bodied bitter is a favourite with beer drinkers everywhere. The rich flavours of premium malt and goldings hops are unmistakable in this well balanced, traditionally brewed bitter.

(Can 44 cl) Courtesy of Bov. Clear, amber golden with a creamy, off-white head leaving some laces. Light in body, light notes of nuts, an edge of cardboard and a vague, underlying tartness. Dry finish with a subdued bitterness. 061007

Cask - gravity A fairly standard bitter; good maltiness and some hops; nothing to get excited about.

440ml can from Asda, Liverpool. Rich deep chestnut colour with thin off white head. Malty bitter aroma. Some digestive biscuit rich malt. Some candy sugar in mouth before bittering hops kick in . A fullish decent bitter ruined by pasteurisation. Otherwise it carries a fair number of items from the cask version, especially the bitter hops on the finish.

[Cask at GBBF] Nut brown. Sweetish and gently roasty with light-medium body and soft, somewhat soapy mouthfeel. Low bitterness. Pretty solid bitter.

(Cask at Dr Duncanโs, Liverpool, 24 July) Colour is brown/dark amber with a frothy head. Nose is fruity with dark fruit and a distinct toffee aroma (Swedish Dumlekola). Taste is fruity with dried fruit, orange and a hint of milk chocolate. Smooth and easy to drink. Fair enough.

Amber color. Some hop aroma. Some sweetness, but too simple taste, some malt and caramel, not enough bitter.

Cask at Doctor Duncanโs Liverpool. One of my all time favourite best bitters. Glorious dark brown colour with aroma of good malt and hops. The balance between the 2 in the mouth and on the finish is superb. It leaves you wanting to sit and do a session on it. Excellent

A dark amber beer with a fine head. It has a sweet aroma of malt with hints of fruitiness. The flavor is a nice flat english bitterness. It contains notes of smoked malt in a good malt blend, that gives it a nice slight sweetness before it ends on a great dry hoppy bitterness. Definatly a great beer, I wish I knew where I could buy it (I got mine from the brewmaster at Ceres when Ceres still owned Cains)

Sampled cask-conditioned at the Dispensary, Liverpool...Dark amber; great foresty flavours (SPF 40 I would say); earthy hop richness; sublime balance; slightly acidic finish; very refreshing.
