In this epic battle, the Blood of the Unicorn has been shed by the sword of the deadly assassin of the east. One sip of this aggressively hopped red ale clearly reveals what drives these, the greatest of, hop heads of lore. Is this the end of the mythical horned horse? Or will he rise like the phoenix to fight another day?

A selection from Half Time, first time with this brewer. Immediately I can say I like the artwork and also that I am pleased to be drinking a tall boy. Interesting premise, a hoppy red ale. I make the pour into a snifter to view a cloudy, brownish-red body sporting a skim of silvery foam. Good lacing potential. The nose definitely carries a lot of hops, nothing else gets through. The taste? Well, as advertised. Grain, a hint of caramel, plenty of pine and malt. Ambers tend to be similar tasting, this one stands out. The high rating is understandable. I can't recall a better amber.

Dark brown with orange highlights and a large foamy brown head that left good lacing. Rough and piney with notes of windex, spruce and vague spice. Long finish. Medium body.

Pour is a deep dark red almost brown with a small tan head. Aroma is sweet caramel malt pine hops and a little dark fruit. Flavor is more heavy caramel malt, some pine hops and some black bread. Not as sweet as I thought it was going to be. This reminds me of some Rogue IPA's around 1999. A hoppy beer where you're expecting a heavy malt presence but Pipeworks does not forget about the hops. The only knock I would have about this beer is that it is super heavy and filling.

Hoppy Red Ale, from a can. Nice hoppy aroma with plenty of citrus, very IPAish. The flavour has plenty of spicyness. Some maltiness but the hops definitely are on the forefront. Quite a long but mild bitterness lingering afterwards. Great balance of flavours and a really enjoyable beer.

Can in a trade with tfontana, thanks Tom. 10/17/19. Real deep red color. Flavor shows me herbal notes, caramel, and toffee. Hearty pine bitterness. Overall, this is a standard west coast influenced amber ale. Pretty boring.
