Can from Beerdome. Aroma is fruity with lots of (artificial) grapefruit, some guava, fruity hop, tropical fruit, orange. Light candied fruit. Flavour is moderate to medium bitter with some sweetness. Medium body. Not a big fan of flavored IPA's like this, but it's fine.

New Belgium, famous as one of America's sour ale pioneers (with the aid of a brewer from Rodenbach in Belgium, it should be added) back in the nineties, has kept evolving in the years since then, and launched its hazy Voodoo Ranger IPA in 2017 to keep pace with the NEIPA craze; this brand was further developed after the takeover by Kirin in 2019 and has led to multiple variants, including this fruit IPA, flavoured with grapefruit and guava - which to me seem redundant as these flavours are naturally present in hazy IPAs, but who am I to judge New Belgium's business. Thick and frothy, pillowy, egg-white, stable head on a fully hazy yolk-yellow blonde beer with deeper apricot hue. Aroma of very zesty citrus peel and citrus fruit, pink grapefruit indeed but orange and lime too, lots of sweet guava, guava cake (or cake dough) even, honey, sugared lemon juice, green melon, Fanta, orange blossoms, jasmin, hand soap, dusty old crackers, drying grass. Crisp onset, very fizzy carbonation with minerally effects distracting from the fruitiness though a strong citrusiness easily pierces through; guava is very clear as well, albeit in a somewhat artificial, sweet and perfumey way. Slick body, doughy malt core with grainy edges, remaining relatively low in sweetness actually - compared with many other present-day NEIPAs and fruit IPAs at least - but not sour either; strong, colourful zestiness in the finish, indeed giving the impression of a firm dose of actual added citrus on top of the natural citrusiness of the hops; the grapefruit takes the upper hand, in other words, while the influence of the guava diminishes, though remaining clearly noticeable as a soapy, perfumey, tropically sweet background flavour. Some 'powderiness' too, but no hop burn; instead the hops unfold their green mango and lime peel features and a bit of soft bitterness to the finish, which I always enthusiastically welcome in this class of beers. Feels a little bit 'forced' and artificial, but generally a decent fruit IPA, with all the flavours one who would not be familiar with that concept, could associate with 'fruit IPA'. Still, in the long run, I think New Belgium will be remembered mostly for the pioneering La Folie (one of the first American sour ales) and the Lips of Faith series, apart of course from their flagship Fat Tire, which in its own way became one of those classic names in the early development of U.S. craft beer.

Tasting this evening from a 12 oz can of V2K, been some time since I tried a New Belgium brew. Tilting into a tulip glass, I see a light colored lemon yellow body, hazy certainly, with a bare top of solidly white foam. The scent, hmm, pretty nice. Mango, citrus, a hint of hops. I lift for a drink, straight ahead grapefruit, some hoppiness, a little pine and no guava I can detect. Bittersweet might be the right word for it, with an emphasis on the bitter side, not much sweet to offset. Not what I anticipated.

Draft at Alchemist Coffee. Hazy, yellow golden pour with a small creamy head. Light aroma, fruity, some tropical, pineapple. Taste also features faint fruity flavors. Like a hazy IPA dumbed down to ridiculous levels. Aroma and taste are barely there. Easy to drink, nothing to think about.
